Cathode Ray Blues

The Philco is dying.
It's actually a Sony Wega, our only television. Big, fat, flat CRT about 10 or 11 years old. It's started making a loud pop and then the picture kinda explodes into a pyrotechnic swirl of really pretty colors and then goes dark. Turning it off and then back on brings it back.
Looks like I'll be able to replace it with a 42" class flat screen of some sort for way less than I paid for it, but I have intentionally not kept up with TV tech. Not interested in spending any money fixing it and besides, there's nobody nearby who does that sort of thing. Does anybody any more?
What stinks is the fact that this behemoth has nearly as good a picture as most modern tvs I see in the stores.

Your recommendations please?

We have 2 repair shops here still for TV's. We have a Vizio Plasma and a RCA rear projector, i've had to do a lightbulb in the projector and nothign with the plasma. both are about 4-5 years old now Vizio is cheaper.. but they seem atleast in my case to last for awhile. It'd be worth a google search for 'Tv Repair' in your area

If you are lucky enough to still be able to pitch a CRT TV in the trash, do so now. Most places will not accept CRTs now or soon.

Guess from your reference you're not close to the city. I have two Sony 27" and I had both repaired. Really wasn't that much considering.
Most repair you'd find in the city areas. Sometimes a lot of high quality guys do it out of the garage locally, look in your local flyers.
Picture tubes can be rebuilt too.
Older TV usually uses less juice than the new flat screens, at least that's what I've read.

I'm deep in the sticks. No repair options nearby as far as I can tell. I'm surprised to hear that a big CRT would use less power than a modern flat screen, given the amount of heat this thing gives off. My dumpster is big enough to take it.
After some reading, I'm leaning towards an LED set at this point.

Those big, silver flat crt WEGAs were pretty sexy when they were new in the late 90's. I almost went for a 16:9 format one but decided to get a 50" Pioneer plasma panel instead when HD was just starting to be deployed.

I still think that plasma has some advantages over LCD/LED panels, but those skinny panels have gotten better and better.

Wow. That plasma cost you several appendages back then I'll bet. Still watching it?

We bought it in 1998 from a bankrupt "dot com" company in Honolulu, they were using a dozen of them as eye candy in their lobby.

Rather than ship it to AZ, we included it and all the home AV stuff that was built into a concealed closet, with the sale of our house.

The only downside with that commercial grade plasma was that it gave off a bit more IR radiation than home models, so I had to shield the IR remote controls.
