You and others who can hold a dialog have now departed for other sites because the moderation on here, which would limit the trolls and the rants (specifically prohibited by the TOU) is non-existent.

It's a sad commentary. The site was superior when it was moderated properly.

And just exactly when was that?

You missed the point. It's not about "silencing" anyone. It is about integrity of information. I'm all for political discussion so long as it is based on fact (and those who post are actually interested in discussion) but so often is the case with chain emails (which has been demonstrated ad nauseum) there is absolutely no effort to check any facts or information before throwing it on up here in OD. When people call you out on how stupid some of these chain emails and copied-pasted blog entries are, it's silencing? More like fact-checking which should have been done prior to posting in the first place. I'm amazed the moderators have let it go on for so long, considering those threads typically infringe both spam and trolling standards.

Do you have a question that you would like to ask me?

Not at all.
There are times I miss JR's input here.

That is one intellectual ship that will never be deflected by hurricanes, icebergs, pirates, etc., particularly if they approach the ship from the left.

Of all the left & right bias and hyperbole on here, JR's was perhaps the worst. Rampant name calling, ranting and various insults were the norm. I do not miss that.

And Mr. Carlton, you seem to think that anyone with an opinion differing from yours is an idiot. Why is that? Your insinuations regarding moderation techniques border on the thuggish.

Face it--there are authoritarians on both sides. "Liberal" used to mean someone who supported individual rights--free speech etc. But there are those who want to be called "liberals" who would like nothing better than to silence all the speech with which they disagree. Why do you suppose that the so-called "liberal Media" is so one-sided in its reporting and commentary? Wouldn't you expect a truly "liberal" media to advocate all points of view?

Sometimes Brian makes that assumption incorrectly. Often he does not.

If we were all honest, don't we believe that anyone who disagrees with us is less intelligent/ informed? After all, if "I" came to a certain conclusion, would not all equally rational people eventually reach that same conclusion?
It is really difficult not to impute some defect or other to people with whom we disagree. We just need to do so agreeably.

well put. when I once called myself a classic liberal in the thought that discourse is the oil that keeps the machine running, I was assailled by those who obviously had no idea of what the word liberal once meant. All views should be heard.
