hmmmm.....
I would guess it might be a 4 cylinder cummins. Probably repowered to improve fuel economy. Here a couple of pics of a 4BT :

The 5.9 Cummins are great engines. The rear timing model is kind of a PITA but very reliable.

Yeah they seem to be. On the boat forums the advice is to keep the oil changed, keep an eye on the heat exchanger, and keep the coolant changed.
Seem to be 8k-20k hour motors depending on how you run them. 200-300 off WOT seems to be where they like to cruise.

![]() We agreed on a price, and I put a 10% deposit down on her today. Sea trial is Thursday, if all goes well I should have her the week after next. All I'm asking for from them is an oil sample. The motor has about 850 hours on it, and according to the owner the heat exchanger was done 3-4 years ago, by Cummins, and the PO had the Cummins 1k hour service done by Cummins as well. He spent a few bucks on it$$$.

Oh this winters projects are:
Varnish all the wood. Replace the 4 flush mount rod holders as they are original and not very shiny. Replace the old Garmin GPS and flasher depth finder with a nice new Raymarine color chart plotter/ fish finder. Also I want to send the radar out to Raymarine to be fixed as its not that old and the screen is very hard to see.

Bump:
Sea trial was bumped to today because of the storm and work on the owners part. It went very well, she ran good. Only minor problem is whoever changed the fuel filters last fall didn't fully tighten the injector lines so two started to leak. Thought it was a major problem, but when we popped the hatch saw the fuel and tightened them right up. Ran much better after that! ![]() The other thing which I'm going to have to play with is its not quite coming up to speed. I'm getting 2,450 and not 2600 out of it. We checked the tack on the dash and its surprisingly dead on, go figure. But we photo tacked it anyway and that's all you get. So I think I might send the prop out this winter to be tweaked a bit. I think if they take a bit of pitch off it and clean it up I might get to 2,600rpm's. All in all its a nice boat, I'm going down their tomorrow morning to pay them and do the paper work. When I get back in from sailing later in the day were going to bring it over to the slip.

That's a great name, and Mermaid on the back. Congrats!
My father's boat (Formula 400SS) was nearly sunk a few weeks ago. Someone went WOT on the throttle and supposedly it stuck, ramming my father's boat in its dock and splitting the hydro-hoist it was sitting on apart. When the hydro-hoist sank the boat started taking on water fast. The port outboard was nearly sheered clean off. With the bilges running along with the help of another heavy duty one, it floated long enough for 2 crane boats to get there and drag it to the marina for repairs. Considering how big the hole was I'm shocked it didn't sink.
