When I had my 1976 Goldwing, I use to drive around town with the glove box covers off, and people would come up to me and ask me how I was driving a motorcycle without the gas tank. I would tell them that I bought it that way and have been driving it for years.

Many think the 1100 was the best performing Wing.
Those Wings have 4 CV carburetors and the vacuum-actuated slides are machine fitted into the carb bodies. No rubber diaphragm or anything. These have to be spotless and true to work properly. The carbs are also finicky and have very small passages and even though they are in plain sight they are no picnic to R/R. A popular mod was to fit a small 4 bbl auto carb and I believe some factory even made a manifold to do this.
Also the timing belts should be replaced (30 years old and sitting under tension around pulleys for a while) before running the bike. This is a job best done by a pro. Not expensive or too difficult but catastrophic if bungled. Brake fluid, coolant, lubes and fork oil should all be freshened. I had a friend that stripped a GW like this for a group Colorado road trip. He was able to keep up with everybody and run away from some. Of course he was a good rider but the bike performed well and looked good this way.

If you know what you are doing, it's not really a big deal. My Dad made a manifold to which he connected the biggest and highest resolution vac gauge he could get. He could balance those carbs so well you wouldn't believe it. I lost him about 2 1/2 years ago and was going through some of his stuff a few weeks ago and found his carb tuning gizmo. I had forgotten all about it. Really, it's not that difficult. I've never really been a fan of the Gold Wing, but my Dad went all over North America on his after he retired. He really loved it. If you want a bike for long trips I think it would be tough to beat. My $0.02,
