I use all my credit cards like debit cards- pay them all off when I get the bill. I'm only in it for the perks and convenience.

If vendors offered cash discounts, I would take them up on it.

That may be happening soon, or at least we may be paying surcharges for credit

Bit of advice on late charges. There are several companies that have been known to assess late fees, even though the check cleared your bank before due date. So always check your clearance date before paying fees. I worked in a IT department for a large bank where bill processing was not timely.

AMEX no longer has that requirement.

I have Visa Sapphire - I like it very much. Good benefits, no annual fee...etc.

Yep, this is why I always paid my Visa in person, and why I want a good website with my next card.

Although for simplicity sake I pay all my bills on the 1st and the CC is usually not due to the 18th or 20th or something like that. Never had a problem this way.

The mortgage broker I was talking with says he sees Capital One play games like that and tarnish credit which is otherwise perfect.

Several reasons to have a CC:

Its hard to make large purchases with cash.

Its a PITA to carry a lot of cash if your traveling.

If you buy something with cash and its broke your SOL. I found this out the hard way last year with an FN FAL I almost got stuck with.

CC's are problems for people who have poor spending habits. Mine are not that great so I limit myself to one, which minimizes the hole I can dig for myself.

My Amex has been the best thing I ever did for my company. It saves me money on checks and allows me to track my expenditures. It also gives me a level of protection if I buy something and it breaks, and the seller is giving my a hard time. Amex is not shy about doing charge backs.

FYI their are three kinds of cards: Debit, credit, and charge. I'd recommend at least getting a charge card like well every Amex, you have to pay the balance in full each month, but the benefit is that there are largely no limits on your spend once you establish yourself as a good customer. So in theory if they will let you, you could charge say a new car, or a boat...

Best bet these days, if you have your eye on anything that will require financing, get yourself a credit card or two, use them and pay them off every month.

No credit is as bad as bad credit.

Yeah a Discover mileage card. No fees and I get airline miles.

Only other good card would be an Amex Platinum Delta or whatever they call it. Two problems with that one:

1. They don't take Amex in as many places.
2. They charge a yearly fee which I refuse to pay.

This Discover seemed to be about the same with less rewards but no fee. So far Discover customer service has been awesome, but I have not really tried its teeth out on a merchant like Amex, so the jury is still out.

Just the rewards you say that they have on one of their credit cards would sure be worth it.

Our nearest one is in Reno, about a hundred miles east, but I drive 50,000+ miles a year, and every single tank of fuel is charged, on a credit card, and I tell you, the idea of a free Ruger off them with rewards $$$$ doesn't hurt my feelings at ALL !!!! I need to go back out there.

Man, I love that guy! I just started a third job because of his site and am looking forward to using the extra to fund early retirement and my car habit. I found him because of the YNAB forums遥ou ever heard of that? Whichever credit card you use, YNAB has a nice way of organizing all your accounts for you at a glance. I also saw a 20-25% monthly increase in disposable income when I started using it.
