Having spent time this summer in NYC and Northern NJ . . . frankly I'll take the dry heat to the sauna that is the eastern seaboard during the summer.

Before this debate needlessly goes any further, consider that no place is perfect, as evidenced by the fact that I chose to move from that "hell hole in the Pacific"

I lived in Tucson from 91-97. I miss it. I lived in the SW of Tucson and never saw a scorpion other than in the zoo. Saw one snake out my front door and he was a tinny fella. I liked the weather. Nights were not that bad. The summer could be kind of harsh but I went up to Mt Lemon quite often to escape. The sun sets were beautiful. Not a long drive from LA or SAN. I would move back in a heart beat were it not for work and family.

Not sure if they still do it but we went to the Salt River quite often during the summer and just floated down it on inner tubes. Great way to spend a hot afternoon.

Cities are what you make of them. No place is perfect. DUr

+1
salt river tubing is still very popular. as far as scorpions, snakes, and spiders, that all depends on where you take up residence. ive lived in downtown mesa all of my life. never seen a scorpion at my house or my dads as our houses have been standing alot of years. my inlaws house however, was built on orchard lands, and they have lots of scorpions.

A lot of history in the Phoenix area.

Sedona is just up the road and Flagstaff has some nice places to inexpensively eat.

Diesel is always less expensive in AZ too.

That is true. There is no perfect place. I hate the eastern seaboard summers even more than Phoenix believe it or not. Yes the blast furnace does get a bit much at times but that lack of humidity (for the most part) is infinitely preferable to back east.

Lack of humidity...one of the many reasons I miss Utah. Since moving back east after two years of low humidity, I still haven't gotten accustomed to it, even though I grew up in it.

Hey biking, good luck. Not really constructive, but sounds like you've got a good plan and great things lined up. All the best!

I've had family in Phoenix since before statehood, and personally remember it from the 50s. It's not grown up in a particularly nice way as far as I'm concerned. Maybe part of the problem is it seems that lots of folks moved there not for the valley itself, but for economic reasons. As a result there's no real identity to the place.
If for some inexplicable reason I had to live in an AZ town, Tucson would be my choice I believe. Older. More sense of place.

As you have family here you you should have help with this sort of decision but one thing I'd suggest is not to rush out and buy a house until you get to see what the place is really like. Because of the way the place developed Phoenix is a patchwork quilt of fairly decent areas and good areas right alongside ghetto. You want to try and avoid ghetto as much as possible. The market will be depressed here for a long time so no need to rush in to a house.

I hate Tucson even more than Phoenix. If I really had a choice I'd be living up on the rim somewhere, maybe Flagstaff if I wanted a town.
