Dell bashing

We have a Dell V313w all-in-one printer that came as a freebie with someone's PC. The demo cartridge came with about 5 pages worth of ink which is long gone. @#$^%&! thing won't scan because there's no ink!

I hurt my shoulder the other day. When it feels better, I'll see how far I can hurl this piece of junk. 'til then, maybe there's a way to fool it into thinking there's ink so it earns the space it occupies on my desk.

Printers are cheep or in your case 'free'. They are that way for a reason. The manufactures make their money on the ink, not the printers. Every printer manufacture I am aware of includes demo cartridges with their printers. I know some of the more basic printers can have their cartridges refilled. Refills if done with quality ink, can be much more cost effective than buying new ones. You can go out and buy a new printer but be forewarned, you will have the same issue.

Hope your arm feels better.

Go office space on it.

Also laser printers ftw, I have a brother laser printer that cost like $80 new and gets about 2000 pages per cartridge (had it for three years of grad school = constant printing), carts are about $45 a piece

Every Dell printer I've ever had were made by Lexmark...junk, IMHO

I prefer HP officejets. We have 2 HPs, both 3-in-1 machines that have operated flawlessly over the years.

Ink jet printers of any make are junk. Period. End of story.

Work it over with a hammer and get a laser printer.

Dell/HP/Lexmark=****e

Dell printers are such crap my office tosses the ones they send us free when we buy new servers.
HP hasen't made a decent Office Jet since before Carly ran the place.
Lexmark became ****e when IBM stopped owning them.

Epson is one of the few that actually honors the warranty and sends you a NEW printer to replace any unit that fails during warranty (I have 2, my sister has 3, Bro in Law's have umpteen and my office at last count has 35).

HP machines barely make thru warranty and their ink has become pissoir since Meg took over and "value engineered" the place. Dell changed their printers to reject clone cartridges or refills and Lexmark just stopped production of ink jets.

Canon is ok but again they dead-end the product line and change ink cartidges after 24 months.

My Epsons are 8 years old and I can still get OEM cartridges from them. Can't get the same for the Canon portable I used as site printer and it's only 5 yars old-plus it sucks ink like a cheap streetwalker.

Home Lasers are a PITA because of supply cost.

I have an 10-year-old HP LaserJet 2200dn -- toner has lasted me about 2 years, and aftermarket cartridges are $25 or so. Why bother with a cheap-crap Chinese-made printer when you can pick up something like that for $40 on Craigslist?

A friend turned me on to Brother laser printers. Better page yield per dollar for OE toner than the bigger names. Going strong for over 2 years now with light daily use. Our Officejet is over 4 years old now and performing well despite an M110 appetite for ink (not M100 or M120 appetite but hardly economical). How does it manage to suck color ink when it prints mostly black?

Cr@ppy and cheap designs are one thing. Disabling the scan feature when there's no ink is malicious.
