Pig in a Poke
This is a phrase which I have used for most of my life. It came up recently in reference to the Romney (fill in the word) tax plan.
I ran into a younger man when I was working at Purdue who did not know the origin of it. How many folks here know the term and where it came from?

I think that this means a pig in a sack. It will be quite difficult to get that pig home with nothing more to contain him than the sack.

gato por liebre is how we say it. A cat in place of a hare. Bad deal. Scam.

I thought it was a game show in the 1980's? I'm pretty sure I saw a documentary about some family who won a trip on the show, but the trip turned out to be quite disastrous. If I recall, it was a European trip and the family was from, Chicago?
Something like that... MV |

Obviously, most old diesels we buy could fall into this category.

Thanks for getting the wiki Benz Fan.
From reading it, it sounds as if the meaning could be that there is no real guarantee about the contents.

Man, I saw that heading and who the OP was and got worried that Tom was upset with a recent purchase.

No, Randy sold me Marlene his wagon, and I got to look her over pretty well and drive her before consumating the deal so it was not a pig in a poke.

Knowing Randy, you didn't know ALL the things to watch for. You should have been careful that it wasn't a CALF in a poke! Was this the manual transmission wagon? If so I've ridden in it before.

...or a bred heifer in a poke. Lord knows I have enough of them right now.
Sidebar: We're working the cows later on today: winter worming, remove flytags, calf shots etc. I'm getting rid of four cow-calf pairs too. They should be bred as well. My neighbor is planning to buy them from me so this should work out nicely. 45 is too many for this place and this one man operation. With those 8 gone, I'll be down to 38 and with the ones headed to freezer camp in the spring, it should be right at 30. I think that may be the right number for me.

How's your grass holding out?
I'm looking at high hay bills again this winter. You can see what passes for my grass on that mortar pic.
