If we didn't have upgrades and updates then new features and fixes would not exist.

There is plenty of 'good' reason to upgrade to newer versions of software.

Most companies are no different.

Yes, like foisting bug ridden half tested rubbish onto the customer causing losses to business when it fails to function which is of course then promised to be magically cured by the "upgrade" to the shiny "new" version.

When, say, a car company does this, they get hit with product liability lawsuits.
Ever hear of a company recovering losses caused due to MS software failure? Ever hear of such a suit even being brought?

My Win 7 on the latest hardware does not boot up noticeably faster than my XP on my coal fired desktop.

You should consider looking into 7's hibernation and hybrid-sleep functions.
They are significantly faster than a normal start up.

Boot time is not a significant factor for me as I usually either hibernate the machines or leave them running full time.

Just out of curiosity, what hardware are you running?

How much of that loss is caused by inept/understaffed/etc IT departments, knee-jerkingly blaming the OS software. I'm not saying MS products are perfect, but in the years since Xp and mid-lifespan Vista they've gotten much better at having less bugs. What about all the issues that were caused by a third-party's crappy drivers? (Nvidia, circa Vista launch).

There's a LOT of truth in the above statement.

If Reno had been even slightly computer literate, she could have nailed Bill Gates to the barn door and his hide would still be stretched out there.

In the very early versions of Windows there were hooks that were called "undocumented features." For application developers that knew about and understood how to use the "undocumented features," they could do things within their applications that were almost impossible for developers to do that did NOT have this information. They could also make the applications MUCH more efficient, which was important for some products during that time of very low performance hardware.

Before Windows there were a number of very popular, non Microsoft Applications such as Word Perfect and Lotus 123. There were also the ones from my industry at the time including FactoryLink, Fix and Wonderware.

Once Windows came on the scene, Microsoft developed Word and Excel, to name a few that VERY QUICKLY took over Word Perfect and Lotus' markets. This was because Word & Excel were developed with knowledge of the "undocumented features."

In my industry, FactoryLink and Fix were two of the earliest players in the HMI market, but when Windows came onto the scene, Wonderware came from being many laps down to the clear leader in a VERY short amount of time. I found out later that Wonderware developers had access to the "undocumented features." FactoryLink and Fix were working hard to develop a decent Windows version of their products but were nowhere even in the same ball park as Wonderware since they didn't have access to information regarding the "undocumented features."

If Reno would have had enough knowledge to understand about the "undocumented features" ruse, I expect she could have fined Microsoft into the next galaxy with such Anti Trust violations.

I know that in the developer preview you could disable it with a registry change. They removed this ability in the consumer preview.

I was not sure about RTM.. I've got it install on a tablet but that's about as far as I've gotten with it.

Smaart v5, Protools 7.4 were my biggest losers on switching to 7. ProTools 8 is virtually unusable on 7.... 9 and 10 impossible. There are a few other pieces of audio software that I really like which will not run on 7.
Numerous hardware devices which are not getting drivers for 7 either.

One of the reasons some of us will continue to keep old XP machines handy.

Outlook and office I'm not sure of, as I got a handful of licenses for Office '10 from work, so I never attempted to run the old versions on the newer machines.

XP is where Microsoft successfully brought together the consumer (Windows 95 - 98) and professional (NT) kernels for the first time, so you truly had the best of both worlds.

I preferred Windows 2000, though. Didn't experience the stability issues you're mentioning here, but it sounds like you pushed your systems a lot harder than I did (though I was crunching SETI@home 24/7) ...

Actually, buried somewhere in some old electronic junk I have some of those tiny cores. It would probably take a week to put my hands on them.

And Microsoft is a bunch of rank amateurs in the designed obsolescence game, when you compare them to Apple....

I know that a lot of Creative/SoundBlaster devices didnt get new drivers for Vista/7, but that was mostly Creative's fault I read. They wanted to push new devices more so. There was a project called kX Project to get some cards running on 7. I use it on my one PC with an older SB card.

I know Office 2007 and 2010 have no problems on Vista/7/8. I've not tried using Office 2000/2003.

We developed high speed, real time HMI software. We had some brilliant developers. In the early days of the product the real time kernel had to be written in assembler to offer enough speed. Kind of hard to explain, but we actually used C to develop low level code that ran as if it had been assmbly code. That carried over as the hardware performance improved and made for some AMAZINGLY large and high performance real time systems.

I never had my hands on anything but the Professional versions of 2000, but they were indeed without the old DOS underpinnings. If memory serves me correctly, there might have been a low end standard version that was a carryover of the 98 kernel, but I don't think so.

I DO remember, however, that our world got much more manageable when 2000 came along. As I recall, the high end versions of 2000 were basically the NT 4.0 underpinnings with a much nicer user interface. NT 4.0 was the first NT version that made for actually usable applications, and even then, they were touchy.
