As soon as the school alarm is sounded, all teachers except for the one that is in the room with Mr. Whacko escort the children out of the building. That teacher engages the nut and keeps him occupied knowing that the other teachers are on their way back into the building to partake in some enjoyable target shooting.

Place the whacko's shot up body in front of the school with a sign: "This is how we deal with sickos". Leave the body in front of the school for a full week so that the media can get plenty of news coverage.

LOL.

Asking a 22 year old young woman to be a nurturing presence for tikes AND be ready at a moments notice to take out a heavily armed (and likely armored) individual is a pretty tall order, don't you think? I think you have in mind an Israeli style system where everyone goes to military camp to learn how to use firearms.

Enjoyable?
I'd hate to think the educaters of the next generation of Americans "enjoy" killing any person, crazy, whacko, or otherwise.

On a different note, I can see in this case how he had easy access to firearms. But how do some of these guys, who are in their teens or early 20's, build up huge arsenals without anyone noticing? Anybody who buys a bullet proof vest should be on some kind of national register and be checked out once in a while.

Far easier to regulate the distribution of weapons.

All projectile weapons? Every kind? Or just the scary ones?

You don't trust a rent a cop but you trust a 20 something teacher? Anyone else see a disconnect?

A thought comes to mind....

Instead of trying to figure out what's wrong with our society, where such events take place, and trying to figure out a solution based on that alone...

Perhaps look at a few other countries where guns are quite prevalent, but these types of incidents are seemingly rare or unheard of...

A recent thread or news article on Switzerland, where everyone must do X number of years compulsory service in the militia or military when they come of age - and during that time keep and maintain a military grade infantry rifle, in their personal possession...

Yet, unless the media is completely ignoring it, similar incidents in Switzerland are unheard of....

What are the differences between our country and Switzerland, such that they can have a high number of weapons floating about - not just handguns, sporting rifles, and shotguns, but military grade weapons - but yet remain seemingly free of such tragedies?

Women have a strong maternal instinct to protect children. Give a woman the proper tools and she will protect children from any and all threats.

most rent a cops are being paid to do a job, nothing more, nothing less. Plus, in most cases, there is only ONE rent a cop on the job. Whereas a well trained army of teachers will stand their ground and take care of business.

You are talking about a country where the people are responsible for their own security. Here, we are co-dependent and want to out source our security. I'm too lazy to lift a finger to protect myself so instead I'll hire you to do the job.

Bolt bullet proof desks to the floors of each class room. Install a digital security lock on a desk drawer which houses a high capacity hand gun. Require that teachers attend firearms training monthly. Post the teacher's targets/shooting scores in the front entry of the school.

Why all this? Because it is true, a pussy will seek out a venue where they know no defense will be presented, i.e. a "gun free" zone. These pussies know that in a school, they will face very little opposition. Obviously, we are at war and there is an enemy that MUST be dealt with. Banning guns, limiting the amount of ammunition etc etc. are all band aids.

If these whacko psychotic nut jobs are looking to go out in a blaze of glory, give them what they want, only don't allow them take out innocents in the process.

Nice world you are creating for our children. This stuff didn't happen when I was in school. Why now?

This seems like a good starting point which would hopefully identify what's wrong with our society. We have certainly drifted in a pathological direction.

The way I look at it there always has been a distribution of mental stability in young males. If you either put additional pressure on that population or as some have pointed out normalize violence through video games, treat them with psychological drugs, more on the fringes will fall off the cliff. In terms of evidence of additional pressure I seem to recall that back when Columbine happened there was a significant downward trend in terms of percent of males graduating from college. Add to that making guns more accessible to this population and you have the deadly intersection that we have been witnessing.

Something is this stew needs to be reversed or we have no reason to think that things are going to get better.

What world is that, the real world? I'm talking about the REAL world, a world that appears to be occupied by whackos and nut jobs.... Granted there are a lot of nice people, but children also need to be made aware that there are some certified psychos out there and learn to recognize the signs.

Wouldn't we also be training the wackos to be better shots, ala 9/11 flight school? The only difference between us and Switzerland is sheer population size and racial backgrounds. They also might overall be a "happier" country with fewer outcasts and misfits. It would be worth knowing for sure.

Maybe because of the breakdown of the family? Or the lack of respect for lifes of others? Maybe this person was placed on Ritalin or some other drug because he was labled "hyperactive"?

Maybe he never got shown the "business" end of a belt or a paddle?

There are 100's if not 1000's of reasons why people do some horrific things to each other.

Still didn't answer the question "why now and not before?" I whole hardily agree that more effort needs to be put into identification of at risk individuals.
Unlike you I want to push back the hands of time to where we only had to worry about being nuked when we were in school.
