Well POOP

My SIL just called me and said that someone has burned down our cabin in Somerset KY. We had no insurance.

It's really ok with the wife and I, the cabin was very small and wasn't built very well.

Not to be a pain, but have they checked for bodies in the rubble?

The BIL was living there and he is alright, our SIL said it looked like it was arson. The electricity had been off for month. She is going to notify the police so they can do an investigation. The cabin is out in the middle of nowhere, but there is a volunteer fire station just down the road.

Yes Sir, that's why were not so mad about the place burning down, the whole cabin was only about 250 sq. ft. There is a chance that maybe the mortgage company might have had insurance on it.

If you had a loan on it, wouldn't the insurance company insist you have a policy on it? I would think so unless they felt that they could take over the land if you didn't pay up as a worst case scenario

The mortgage company policy will only cover the mortgage company's loss, not you. Indeed, if there is a nuisance ordinance that covers the remains, you'll also be responsible to take care of that.

The cabin loss sounds ... well, not that bad. Hopefully you didn't have any personal property there.

Good luck with it all, and have a great Christmas, too.
