I was driving by a School and came to an intersection with a Stop Sign (narrow residential Streets).

Acrossed the intersection was a Police Car and 2 Officers with what I guess was a Suspect sitting against the School Chain link Fence.

From the Sidewalk the one Officer saw Me and pointed His Flash Light at Me in a manner that made me think He wanted Me to go around them. I also saw a Hat in the Middle of the Road near them and thought that He wanted Me to go around that; evidence maybe?

So I pulled away extremely slowly to go around the Hat and as I was doing the Office stepped Towards Me still waving the Flash Light in the same Manner and I continued and He kept waving and advancing until He partially blocked My way.

I stopped and He went on as to why I continued to come forward instead of making a left Turn; apparently He was not waving Me around that Hat and did not want Me to go straight down hat Street.
He had stepped in front of My Car He also said He thought I was trying to run over Him.

So I ended up backing up the Car and going the way He wanted to.

This is what I got from the Experience. The Officer some how expected Me to know what He was trying to communicate to Me when He was waving the Flashlight.
The got from the comment that He though I was trying to run over Him that that particular Officer must be a little paranoid.

I also know from some training that I had in the past you can't effectively direct traffic from the Sidewalk.

As I thought about it later I came to the conclusion that the Poilce Officers are a groupe of People that extremely isolated from the main stream of the People and they have their own group think and values. They don't ever get to have a normal life even when they are off duty.
And, that that isolation and the part of the Public that the do deal with does not leave them in a normal frame of mind.

Now what do you suppose would have happend to Me if I had gotten mad at being accused of trying to run over the Officer and talked back?

Some of them do run on paranoia and yes, you are supposed to be able to read their minds. I've noticed the paranoid ones will try and place blame on you with the type of comment you experienced. If you truly were trying to run him down, I submit that your foot would have been to the floor board as you aimed your vehicle straight for him which wasn't the case.

If you ever hear one say, "I am in fear for my life", they are a heart beat from ventilating you. They have been taught to say that to CYA when the police investigation comes down. They have a license to kill and they have a gun to back it up.

The problem is there appears to be a small percentage who are loose cannons. Scary.

The Media made a big deal of the being under gunned but the Law allows the Police to use and Gun that their own Department allows.

There Department I guess never thought to equip the Squad Cars with AR-15s or other similar weapons.

If you pass a barking Dog on the Street it backs away from you untill you go past it and then they will try colse in on you and to follow you until you are out of what ever area they think is their territory.
If you turn around a face them they back off again.

A Dog in his own yard might not back off.

I agree that it's a bit of a conundrum. But, the police officer takes that job with the understanding that he cannot use the weapon unless he's in danger of injury of bodily harm. The standard that "I thought he might have had a gun" isn't acceptable.

Here in NY, the standard by a private citizen that "I thought he might have had a gun" will send you to jail for manslaughter if you use the gun in your own house to shoot an unarmed burglary suspect. Do you expect the standard for a professional to be LESS than the standard for a private citizen?

Sorry, not for me.

Is it your contention that they just burst in with their guns blazing? Based on experience with being stopped, I can't say that I believe that was likely.

How would you do that? If you see someone reaching into a jacket for something, how do you determine if that is a weapon or not without putting themselves in line for a bullet? Do you understand the risk you are asking someone to take in this day and age?
Your previous contention was that the police ordered the individual to stop.

I'm waiting for you to support that position. I'm not interested in more of your ramblings until you can support that position.

I see no evidence of that position in the former case and I definitely see no evidence of that position in the case in NY.

That wasn't a bank robbery, it was suicide-by-cop.... the extended version.

You probably wouldn't leap in to it's family's back yard either....

The dog in question was a Rhodesian Ridgeback.... 70lbs.... Not an aggressive breed, or a very large breed, and certainly not an excessive threat (even if provoked) to a full grown man in good physical condition. (I'm assuming the cop was in good physical condition....)

According to my neighbor who IS a cop in good standing, that is pretty much SOP in most of the departments he has been in and he is getting close to retirement. What else are you wanting? A camera?

So how do you feel about a sub 20# cat? They can sever a tendon too. Any animal, when it feels cornered can turn violent

Let me get this perfectly clear in my mind:

You want us to take the word of your neighbor who claims that the cops "pretty much use SOP" in "most of the departments he has been in" and you want to apply his word across every incident in the entire USA that involves a police shooting and give the cop the benefit of any doubt?

Wow..........I gave you more credit than that.

Will never happen. Get bit a "few" times? If the dog pulls him down and bites him in the neck do you think the next cop will say to themselves -"ok- just one bite before I pull my gun" ??? If the perp is in the yard hidden and the dog attack the cop then the perp shoots the preoccupied cop do you think in the future cops will allow a "few" bites again?

I am saying that the odds are favorable that he was ordered to stop. Do you see any reason why this case would be different? Short of something proving that there was violation of police procedure, I am not sure how we can say that the procedure was violated. While I might wonder if the cops did violate procedure, until I see something that proves so, "innocent until proven guilty" does come to mind.

Further to that, a Marine should know that when a bunch of guns are pointed at his head, it isn't wise to push the envelope. You know that as well as I that if someone has a gun to your head, don't try anything cute.

Nope, not buying that based upon the word of your neighbor.

The NYC police department is a perfect example of police that can easily get out of control at the slightest provocation. They're nervous and trigger happy...........for all the known reasons.

In the instant case, the cops intruded into the homeowner's backyard MINUS a search warrant. Then, they had the arrogance to leave the gate open which gave the dog an opportunity to leave the yard. The cops created their own problem with the dog and then, instead of calling animal control or simply pepper spraying the animal, they did they only things cops know how to do, SHOOT TO KILL.

I don't know about NY cops but are you saying that it isn't procedure or that they violate procedure on a regular basis? I am pretty confident that there is some sort of procedure to announce themselves. Whether they follow it or not or why they don't, I am not certain.

Do you state that they are more edgy than other departments on a percentage basis?
