eBay genius.

This guy buys a safety valve for a gas stove. It's the part that releases the gas for the oven to operate. Appliances are very much like cars in the respects that you need make and model number in order to find the part number.

Him:

To: lorainfurniture
Subject: Item I received is not as described: 4d4m70d4h7 sent a message about Oven Safety Gas Valve 321756 NOS 9413 Nc-1451-5 Natural Gas Eaton #190789196814
Sent Date: Apr-05-13 17:23:19 PDT

Dear lorainfurniture,

This part is wrong it is not natural gas it is LP which will not work on a natural gas stove. please contact me with return info. do you have the right part for my natural gas stove? or should I just buy the right part from someone else. Adam

Me: The "nat" on the label designates it is set up for natural gas. The only difference between natural gas safety valves and propane is the orifice tip. The actual unit is the same.

Him: I went the the hardware store and they did not have any adapters to screw into the gas line side it is not a flare fitting or a compression fitting or mip there is no pipe that will screw into it and they said that the reason it is different is because its for lp? My oven has a flare pipe for natural gas and it won't fit and there is no adapter to make them fit because they had no fitting that would screw into an lp value.

Me: If you are referring to the inlet part, no hardware store would have connections for that. Those fittings are specific to the appliance industry. Please send me the model # of your stove and ill check to see if you got the right part. Do any of the numbers match your old safety valve?

Him: the old valve uses flare fittings and its a eaton and the part number is NC-4125-5

Me: Dear 4d4m70d4h7,

I'm not sure why you would think it would fit when the part numbers are different.

You bought a nc-1451-5. They are completely different valves. Did any of the numbers in my description match your old valve, or did you buy it just because it looked the same?

You can return it to

Lorain furniture and appliance
4617 Lorain ave
Cleveland ohio 44102

Once I receive it in its original unused condition I will issue a refund of your purchase price.

Too bad I actually have to accept his return in order to be a top rated seller. I wish sometimes more than anything I could just call him a moron.

I have run into Morons from the time I worked at a Service Station during high school (over a $2 car wash) until the time I retired. Some of the deals involved tens of millions of dollars, but I always did everything I could to keep a Customer happy.

No matter if you are dealing with some lady that thinks her car is not clean enough or some small country you are buying tankers full of oil from I always tried to be the most helpful person out there. My fall-back line was always 'Well, I can see why you would think that' and usually I could, but I would do what I could to keep them as a customer.

As long as it did not turn into an everyday sort of thing I still made money over the long run. I also checked with them now and then to make sure they were making money on the deal as well.

If both sides are happy with a contract then it is a good one.

It can be both a blessing and a curse to do business on eBay. It can give one access to a larger market than one would otherwise be able to reach, but that larger market will also include a few more idiots, and the costs associated with dealing with them.

When I run into the occasional clunker, I sometimes evaluate things to see if there's a way I might have avoided that clunker without having too serious a negative impact on other, generally profitable business. More often than not, my evaluation is that the clunker is just part of the good business. Sometimes I find ways I can tweak things that might avoid certain problems in the future - but I know I can't idiot-proof everything.

I expect you know all of that already, of course - which is why you aren't calling the guy a moron.

And sometimes they simply get the best of you. Some of these guys are masters at wasting your time and they can use up a lot of it. They run the same show over and over again and they can use up hundreds of man hours every year while vendors trip over each other to satisfy these jerks.

Had one recently who wanted some sleeves for his engine. I gave him a price of 36 dollars each. Then he wanted to know the size, material composition, press fit requirements and a dozen other things. I answered all of his questions and then he tried to grind me down on my price. Considering that I was going to make 36 bucks on the deal I really didn't have any room. He kept at me and finally I told him that if he continued to grind me and use up all of my time that I would cut him loose. Then he asked for something else which he also grinded me on. Then he called me from Lebanon..........saying that my emails were getting too tense.

So, I ordered the sleeves for him. Considering how much time I had spent on his guy I wanted to recoup something - anything......... Well, I should have cut him loose ' cause I still have the sleeves........

He went from 20 emails a day to zero after I told him I had his part in stock. His way of getting even with me for challenging him I suppose.

I feel your pain. I had an ebay business for 2 months when I was laid off. I bought returned electronics from best buy and would sell the working ones. People would email me all the time about various items and ask stupid questions that were answered in the first line of the listing! I would just reply, "here is what the listing says." and then I would copy and paste and bold the first line or which ever part would answer the question.

One guy bought a MS keyboard from me. I shipped it as soon as the payment came in and he got it in 2 days. Then I get an email from him saying that the CD with the driver on it was broke in half (A CD is very flexible. How in the world did it break. Unless you tried to break it?) I replied, "hmmm...It wasn't like that when I shipped it. The driver isn't really needed for that keyboard anyway. Your PC will have the driver for it, but if you really need it you can download it for free on MS website." I got negative feedback within minutes. I had flawless 100% up until then. The feedback said, "ITEM DAMAGED. WILL NOT WORK. SELLER SAYS NOT HIS FAULT?!?!?!?" I know the keyboard worked when it left. I tested everything I sold. I think USPS either damaged it or this guy was just a moron and didn't mention anything not working but the CD being broke in half. When I got my job back I left FEEbay behind. I do miss getting those boxes of electronics though. I would usually end up keeping some of it. Like the Canon 30D that came in. That was a nice surprise!

This wasn't an ebay transaction. I helped him through a club based web site.
A vendor friend of mine told me the guy is a real PAIA asking all sorts of questions but never really buying anything, sending things back, wasting time.

I have had more than one customer come in with a box half full of business cards and asked if they could get credit on new ones because their phone number had changed.

The idiot just returned a valve to me. It's completely different. This guy just went from idiot to idiot and/or scammer. I reported him to eBay. Well see what happens.

Hell I know what's going to happen, I'm going to get negative feedback, be stuck with a gas valve that was never mine, and I'm going to have to give this fool his money back.

If it does go as I suspect, ill be washing my hands of eBay indefinitely.

It's funny you say that, because I already sent the guy a full refund. The part that he sent me tested out fine so I will be able to resell it. I'm past the point in my life where I get bent out of shape for forty bucks.
