Yes, and it would have been so much better if they had done it for less pay and been thankful for having a job the way so many of our WalMart employees do. They just didn't know their place.

Do you really think WalMart employees need to be paid more? Please...you really need to understand that to increase the wages, increases the cost of their products, which in turn means their increased wages don't really do much more than increase their taxes. It's a horrible cycle, one that has yet to end, and everyone winds up getting hurt by it.

Clearly workers should be paid according to their need for money, not according to their ability to generate a market.

She seemed like a good PM.

I'm no fan of unions, and the British ones ruined their automotive industry. She reigned some of there power in.

it is a common perception that the unions ruined the british automotive industry....I'd love to see an analysis of that time period and see if that perception is true.

I win??? Let's not make this personal!

Who pays for the mistakes of a capitalist system then? To where do the banks run when they've been too greedy? They go to Daddy government. And then after hand outs and bail outs - and absurd bonuses have been paid to the idiots who have made the mess in the first place - they start *****ing and moaning about taxes and the social system.

The problem with capitalism is that it often uses convenient economics. The costs of building and maintaining an existing society and infrastructure are conveniently ignored They are assumed to be just like sunlight - a gift.

The problem with modern social systems is that they are intertwined with a childish greedy capitalist system that doesn't value the social support.

Neither socialism or capitalism should ignore economics.

I think that that perception is wrong.

The reason why British Leyland fell apart is that they made products that nobody wanted to buy (for the price). Sure striking didn't help productivity or the quality of the product (just look at the way in which Jaguars were thrown together back then)...

...but I think the main problems were with the management. Arrogant management killed both the British car and motor bike industry. They didn't move with the times.

I don't think the lives of the working classes are worthless. If it wasn't for the working classes the industrial revolution and the beginning of capitalism would never have started. Not only did the working classes actually get the job done they also produced some of the finest engineers and technicians (who subsequently became middle class!) in society. Whereas the leading elite produced...

...what exactly?

Whilst the strikes were undoubtedly a problem at the time - the problem with the evil Mrs T was that she over reacted and destroyed communities. She put people out of work and forced them into a benefit system that still hinders the country today. It was a stupid paranoid negative move.

I don't know that much about the British car industry but here in the us a lot of folks like to blame labor for the us car manufacturers losing market share to the Japanese. It is clear to me that management made poor decisions about quality of assembly and modernizing the designs. It is not the workers who make such basic choices. In the us management always chose short term profit over building a better product in the crucial years from about 1970 on.
