There are many types of competition that use steel targets. Jacketed ammo can ricochet all over the place and make danger for everyone. Cast lead is soft and doesn't pose such risk.

As a resident of CA you probably can't own it, but its fun to look at. Aren't .50's illegal in the communist state?

They are very easy to shoot BTW.

Not really, it sounds more complicated than it works in real life.

Ammo, assuming it could be found anywhere, probably two bucks a shot. Buy in bulk? Great, 1500 bucks for a thousand rounds. About enough to get you used to the cartridge and pistol. What's not to like?

The first firearm I owned was a Winchester Model 70 (post '64) in 7mm Remington Magnum. I was in the Navy when I got it and had already qualified on the M16 rifle, M60 machine gun, and M9 pistol, along with having been on the rifle teams in high school and college, so I was pretty familiar with shooting by the time I got it. I traded it in on something else and don't really miss it. The one that got away was a Model 1895 Spanish Mauser cavalry carbine in 7mm Mauser. I did some research and found that it had been made around 1896. It had been sporterized, and the receiver was drilled and tapped for a scope mount at some point. It wasn't really worth anything, but I really liked it.

For an adult who hasn't shot before looking for a first gun, questions include rifle, pistol, or shotgun, intended use, and how much time one is willing to devote to practice. If one is looking at a handgun for diversification of investment that can also be taken to the range occasionally for recreational shooting, I would suggest something in a major name brand, preferably older, and chambering any of the less punishing fairly common calibers. A Ruger Single Six or Bearcat in .22 LR would fit the bill, as would many older Ruger, Colt, and S&W revolvers in .38, .357 mag (you can shoot .38's in them), .44 spl (a sweet and under-rated cartridge), or .45 Colt. Older S&W Model 29 in .44 mag was holding value well last time I checked, and you can shoot .44 spl in them. There are many choices in a 1911 .45 ACP as well.

A thousand rounds for proficiency? I totally agree! Not only that, but if you want to MAINTAIN that proficiency, you need to stay in practice. Pistol shooting proficiency goes away fast if you are not practicing regularly. BTDT.

44 spl work great in my SW 29 and the anaconda. But don’t switch back to the 44 mag without a thorough cleaning.

You'd just get one of the legal .44's and get a .50ae conversion kit

I hear you guys on practicing pistols, but ammo is impossible to find right now around here. You can get it online but last i checked .40s and 9mms at 50 cents a round + shipping.

from the doj website:

12128. As used in this chapter, the "drop safety requirement for handguns" means that at the conclusion of the firing requirements for handguns described in Section 12127, the same certified independent testing laboratory shall subject the same three handguns of the make and model for which certification is sought, to the following test:
A primed case (no powder or projectile) shall be inserted into the chamber. For pistols, the slide shall be released, allowing it to move forward under the impetus of the recoil spring, and an empty magazine shall be inserted. For both pistols and revolvers, the weapon shall be placed in a drop fixture capable of dropping the pistol from a drop height of 1m + 1cm (39.4 + 0.4 in.) onto the largest side of a slab of solid concrete having minimum dimensions of 7.5 X 15 X 15 cm (3 X 6 X 6 in.). The drop distance shall be measured from the lowermost portion of the weapon to the top surface of the slab. The weapon shall be dropped from a fixture and not from the hand. The weapon shall be dropped in the condition that it would be in if it were dropped from a hand (cocked with no manual safety applied). If the design of a pistol is such that upon leaving the hand a "safety" is automatically applied by the pistol, this feature shall not be defeated. An approved drop fixture is a short piece of string with the weapon attached at one end and the other end held in an air vise until the drop is initiated.
The following six drops shall be performed:
(a) Normal firing position with barrel horizontal.
(b) Upside down with barrel horizontal.
(c) On grip with barrel vertical.
(d) On muzzle with barrel vertical.
(e) On either side with barrel horizontal.
(f) If there is an exposed hammer or striker, on the rearmost point of that device, otherwise on the rearmost point of the weapon.
The primer shall be examined for indentations after each drop. If indentations are present, a fresh primed case shall be used for the next drop.
The handgun shall pass this test if each of the three test guns does not fire the primer.

If that gal had been using her left hand to "firm up" her hold on the grip of the pistol, the recoil would have been nothing more than a jarring experience and about a 3-5mm. extension on the "mosquito bites" for about 30 seconds or so.

Instead, she ended up with an abrasion on her NOSE? She's lucky she didn't poke one of her eyes out with that thing!

Hold on firmly, expect a jolt. If it happens, you were ready. If you weren't, you're on YouTube.
