Car Chase Scenes

I have to admit that I have enjoyed a good car chase movie scene since well before I could hold a driver's license. I especially like scenes in older movies, as they were usually not done so artfully as they are today. Every once in a while I will hit YouTube and see if I can dredge an old or obscure one up. Here is one from a 1965 British movie that I never heard of until today:

I still think this is one of the great ones:William Friedkin on the Car Chase Scene In THE FRENCH CONNECTION

And "THE SEVEN-UPS CAR CHASE" is not bad either.

And a good one from Bollywood.

What I liked about the one in your YouTube is that it seemed real. The ones I detest are the fake ones where things happen like tires squealing on a dirt road.

Even though there was a touch of Hollywood in it, my favorite remains as Bullit. I still have the Road & Track magazine for '68 with the story about the filming. It turned out to be studio propaganda, while the true story that came out later was even better.

Sounds great Dubyagee, although it doesn't sound like the stone stock version in Bullit. The one in your youtube has tubing headers among other exhaust changes that make it sound radically different from a stocker.

In the sixties, there probably wasn't a kid in town that didn't have some sort of exhaust modifications, so you HEARD lots of cars then. I could hear the difference by listening to a point where I could identify a Ford, Chevy, Mopar or Pontiac. Most of the others didn't get loud pipes.

The Mopar's CLEARLY sounded best. I expect it has something to do with the firing order although I've never looked into it. From a marketing standpoint, I think Mopar recognized the importance of sound. They had unsilenced air cleaners on all of their performance cars which added more effect than one might think. The Hemi cars had different mufflers for higher flow, but I think that they paid attention to their sound while they were developing them.

Mopars were a HUGE part of the street scene in those days.

"To Live and Die in L.A." William Friedkin sure knows how to do a good car chase.

Oh yeah Jim! I forgot about that one. It had some pretty realistic sights and sounds in it. It also had an actor named Dean Jagger in his twilight years. He did some great movies in his younger years and did a great part on the rattlesnakes in that movie.

It definitely had some great Mopar sound in it too.
