Here's an article I caught a few days ago, and though it's talking best burger, not best joint, it did give props to In and Out. Best Burgers in the U.S. | Kitchen Daily
I think the divide is in what you mean by "joint." No one really expects *all that much* from a fast-food place. There's a place not too far from where I live called "big mouth burger" that is really good, bit it's a far cry from fast food. It's a local chain with a few locations. Not cheap, not fast, but very good. For fast food, In and Out is better than most, but their real claim to fame is that they are relatively healthy. No nuke-em burgers (burger king) or mystery mash up of cows (mickey d's) and their fries aren't as bad for you either...but the fries are pretty bland. Let's face it, fat tastes good, what? ![]() When I'm around them (usually Phoenix area), Whataburger is pretty good as well for fast food. The Carls Jr. stores around here aren't that great for burgers, most of them in CA are partnered with the Green Burrito and I usually end up ordering from that menu if I go there. Five Guys burgers are okay, but again, not fast food. I really, really like their fries, though. I haven't been there in there in 30-odd years, but The Purple Turtle in Phoenix used to have excellent burgers. (It's really more of a bar & grill.) All of that said, I don't eat a whole lot of red meat anymore, burgers included. My GF and I had a cookout over the weekend with a bunch of people over and we used the patties from Costco, which were okay. The fat content must be pretty significant, because they went from very, very large to burger size pretty quickly. ![]() ![]() |

If you're ever visit Los Angeles go to the Apple Pan in West LA. The joint has used the same recipe for almost a century and absolute the best burger you will ever have.
Huell Howser visiting the APPLE PAN In-N-Out is not bad but their fries sucks, taste like fish.

There used to be a little horse drawn wagon that sat in the traffic circle in Maimisburg, Ohio that served sliders cooked in lots of fat over a propane burner. They were served with pickle, onion and black pepper only...if you wanted anything else on it, you better have it on you, because they didn't serve it.
There's another small place in Morain, Ohio, Voltzy's. Votltzy's started in a parking lot in a converted travel trailer. He was out there every summer, no matter the weather, frying up some really tasty burgers. After about 20 years, he was finally able to have a brick and mortar built up the road...it took that long to save the cash for the property and the building...and he still sells them as if it were in his trailer, through a window and you eat outside on a picnic bench. I like to stop there about every other time I visit the area.

Most likely...He's been spotlighted a few times.
During Clinton's time in office, he built a burger that was 9 one pound patties, served with 4 slices of cheese each layer. A bunch of my drinking buddies and I ordered one up for a night of young adult imbibbing and other things that aren't good for you. It took us well over an hour to eat it all, and swore we'd never put ourselves through it again. LOL I see he now has a Clinton Divorce Finale...a 17 pound burger with ham. The "Menke" is named after a buddy of mine. When he retired as a volunteer fire fighter a few years ago, we called Voltzy to cater the event...and he took what Dick always ordered, at least twice a week for years, and dubbed it the Menke in his honor. Voltzy is one of those guys that remembers you even if you haven't been there in years. I came back after moving away for a couple of years, and he recognized me in the line and told everyone else to back up a space so I could get my order in. When my dad passed away, he showed up to the funeral home to pay his respects to my mother, who ate there at least once a week...and she always brought one home for dad. He shut down for the day to come to the memorial. He's a really great guy.

As luck would have it I went to In 'n Out today; I didn't have a lot of time and it was walking distance from the office with an ATM in between.
As I sat there eating, I kept catching whiffs of halitosis. I looked around to find that the closest person to me was about three feet away (on either side). I kept wondering how bad halitosis must be to travel that far. And it sure didn't help the taste of the burger. Ugh. Reminded me of the old George Carlin insult: "Anyone can have bad breath, Marge, but you could knock buzzards off a s-h-!-t-wagon." |

Joey C's is my favorite burger place in Milford. Once a week usually on Friday I go their for a late lunch and get a fantastic burger, and he always has great beer on tap. After I get sloshed their I go right to happy hour perfectly primed!
