One reason to love Eric Holder...
No sarcasm intended this time around. Maybe addicts will finally start getting treatment, rather than becoming part of the nationally disgraceful figure of nearly 1% of the US population kept in prisons. Kudos to a federal Attorney General for "getting it!"
Eric Holder: "widespread incarceration...is both ineffective and unsustainable" - Hit & Run : Reason.com "Although incarceration has a role to play in our justice system, widespread incarceration at the federal, state and local levels is both ineffective and unsustainable," Mr. Holder's speech says. "It imposes a significant economic burden — totaling $80 billion in 2010 alone — and it comes with human and moral costs that are impossible to calculate." |

Treatment doesn't work most of the time.
Is why they educate from Kindergarten before they get hooked up. |

Providing free housing for a few years then letting them back on the street with no prospects, lather, rinse, repeat doesn't work either.

It's just enhanced "time out" with more physical education, exposure to alternative history and non-traditional industrial arts classes.

Maybe you should look into how Portugal addressed its drug problem before making such a glaringly incorrect statement.

It is revolutionary and refreshing to have an attorney general speak despairingly about the prison system. For generations prison has been used as a human garbage dump/warehouse and an increasing burden in a number of ways upon We The People. It is one of the more disgusting self-perpetuating works projects the .gov has granted itself.
For some classes of offenders there are far better solutions that are possible which are not expensive, and which can save the perp from destroying their ability to get most jobs because they did something trivial. In some states several years ago the .gov started to treat some criminals who have psychological problems with medical treatment rather than sending them to prison. This has had extraordinary results in most cases. In other cases, minor drug offenders and other non-violent offenders, perform community service or are sent to technical school. There are some who ought to be behind bars. The system has failed to keep up with changing times.............. |

S'funny, my info says treatment gets more bang for the buck than incarceration for non-violent offenders.
