It appears the NRA has unfairly cornered this market, and has enough GOP politicians on their payroll to ensure they keep the market segment strong. As gun owner I had to take the NRA gun safety course - it bothers me that I am forced to contribute to an organization like the NRA indirectly through this requirement. I am equally certain that conservatives would be appalled if their money went towards funding some leftist organization through some state law requiring them to pay for a similar license that was cornered by a liberal group.

Could another entity start a gun course that has equivalent material? It would seem that giving a private company a state monopoly would violate the Sherman Act.

My state will issue a CCW to anyone who has taken a course from an NRA certified instructor. The state doesn't mandate the course curriculum or study items at all, they just issue the form for the instructor to sign. Other than simplifying the buying process at a gun store, a CCW in AZ is unnecessary. It's legal to carry concealed here without a permit of any kind. What's scary is that our CCW is reciprocal with a bunch of states. A buddy of mine, who frankly doesn't shoot very much, has no LE or military background etc. just completed his NRA instructor certification and has set himself up to do private instruction through our only local shooting range. He described the certification process as butt simple and nearly worthless.
I feel safer already.

You do know DNC and now GOP use similar data encompassing all areas of voter preferences for many many other things than guns?
Supposedly is why Obama had an edge in 08'. |

The NRA is a gun database by definition.

More of a gun enthusiast database. I was an NRA member for about four years before I actually owned a gun.

Getting a state to sanction and maintain your monopoly might be seen as "unfair use."

Weblogs are a waste of time and do nothing but ignore the facts and spread BS. Admittedly, I occasionally read some of the right wing conspiracy sites to see if I can find a nugget after the fact. I learned a few years ago to not post their links unless they've been compared to left wing sources as well. Once that happens, then it's Game On. There's a difference between reality of the whole picture and fantazy based on just a few words from a piece of paper. The thread you referenced in the above quote is a perfect example. There will be no blue hats marching in US streets, grabbing your guns, no matter what kind they are, providing they fall within the realm of the law. If you read the entire published information on that story, you'll see that it involves RPGs, nuclear, weaponized chemical, and other similar weapons...basically what is illegal to own. It doesn't point to legal full autos, semi auto rifles and pistols, revolvers or shotguns...someone on that thread said that there's not enough blue hat wearing people to handle the amount of weapons in this country. Hell...our own government can't control it, what makes anyone think that the UN can? Like I said...people shouldn't be posting BS from weblogs unless they understand that what is being said is generally not true, and twisted from just a few uttered words.
