IT guru question

Question for those who know more about computers/networking than us:

Avast anti-virus was installed on my-coworker's work computer on Monday. By Thursday, some strange issues like clicking on a program on the desktop would not open the program. The company uses Symantec as its normal anti-virus.

At the same time during the week, our IT contractors were changing permissions, credentials and accesses for reasons undisclosed, possibly due to adding a new employee and other organizational changes.

The company is now claiming Avast caused all the problems and is trying to blame the down-loader; the IT contractor has supposedly agreed in a report.

The co-worker suspects that perhaps other changes the contractor made in the background should also be considered in this situation.

Aren't there logs that could be examined to determine if this is true?
If he were to ask for the log for the week, could it possibly disclose additional info that he could use to defend himself?

That sounds more like a permission issue of some type, or a corrupt OS. Though I suppose if Avast were going through its first system-wide scan on a slow computer, it could make programs appear not to load (they would load, just take minutes to start). However, if Avast was installed on Monday and this started on Thursday, I'd be more inclined to blame the IT contractors' changes.

As far as examining the logs -- why try to place blame on anybody? Fix the problem, consider it an act of G-d, and move on. If HR is actually spending time on a witch-hunt, the HR people should be subject to defenestration. "Writing a report" because of a Windows machine going t1ts-up *sigh* what is this world coming to.

I suppose one could examine the Event Logs for any application errors (and system logs for any disk i/o errors), but this should be an avenue to fixing the problem, not an avenue for finding whom to string up, unless this is a recurring problem with the IT contractors or a given employee. Lastly, was Symantec cleanly removed before Avast was installed?

Anti viruses can cause all sorts of problems. There's been 2 cases i know of where customers installing Krapspersky Anti Virus had either their keyboard or mouse or both permanently disabled, requiring a reinstallation of windows. And AVG, half the time is harder to get rid of than viruses themselves!

If they use a corporate anti virus and that machine is on the domain, they can push the anti virus and updates to it. Once they do, Samantec will take over and disable your other antivirus, and you wont be able to uninstall it without going into the registry.

If she travels with this machine, she'll need to vpn on a regular bases in order to connect to the corporate antivirus server and do updates.

How many tech-support specialists does it take to cross a cow-orker and a scapegoat and what do you get?
