Partition questions
Got a hand me down PC (Dell). Running Pent Dual Core with 6GB, 1TB HD. Adequate for my needs.
Did a clean instal on W7 and partitioned the HD. I used the Computer Management app to partition it. It would only let me shrink the boot partition down to 473GB. Far larger than I need or want it to be. I wanted to shrink it down to about 150GB. Can this be done Can I delete the factory restore partition without any ill effects? I usually build my own systems (just built a HTC computer I7. SSD. 6GB and a bluray player) so I am not to familiar with this hidden partition thing. Thanks

Defrag the partition, delete the page file. There's probably data at the end of the partition preventing it from being resized. Defragging the partition will consolidate the data so it can be shrunk.

The partition started out at 917G and it allowed me to shrink it to 473 so I was able to shrink it just not as small as I wanted to. It only shows about 70G used.
By page file do you mean the swap file? Also, I did a format and clean install so there should not be anything to defrag should there?

7 minutes! Usually it takes you at least 10-30.

That is all way too big. Win7 install should be less than 10GB. I would completely reformat. If you want to keep data on the drive, back it up and then reformat.

One of those partitions is the factory restore partition - It might have specific drivers and such that are nice to have around (saves you the search and download game). I'd keep that just in case (and the restore partition is usually pretty small anyway)

About 40G. I checked the device manager and no errors.

Download a linux live CD - opensuse for example and use the live CD to partition the HDD. (It will "do" NTFS or whatever too)

If you don't need the OS, dump the recovery partition. Restoring from it reloads all the factory crapware.
Then just format the disk and use it all, OS, apps and data on a single partition. Unless you're going to multi-boot this box, there's no advantage to partitioning the drive. Good luck. |

There is a way to shrink the partition to less than 50%.
Windows stores system security file in the middle of the partion, you have to switch that off first.
Switch system security back on. Rob |

Close but no cigar. I did what you instructed but it only allows me to shrink the partition by an additional 11G from 485G to 474G. The drive only has about 50G including the swap.
