gold plating emblems

I was curuious as to how to gold plate things on the MB. I am thinking of gold plating the mercedes emblem on the front of the car, the trunk star, the "300SEL" sign and the chrome strip right under the trunk. How and where do I get this done? Is this a DIY project? I would appreciate any input.

Howdy Snibble,
Look in the phone book under plating. Too much of a hassle to diy, Although some people have done it. Long before you can get it set up a plater could have it done.

Don't tell me you're going to turn your car into a pimpmobile?

You could just truck on down to the dealer and order a "gold trim package" for your car. I think that package included everything you wish to plate.

Personally, very few Benzes look good with the gold.

pimpmobile

no, thats not what I had in mind, LOL. I was messing around with photoshop and seeing things I could do to my car to make it unique and yet look very nice. I have a white 300sel but with euro lights and clear blinkers, the gold front emblem(not the grill, just the emblem) and the "300 sel", trunk star, and the chrome part under the trunk plated in gold... in my oppinion looks very nice.

If I were in the market in making my car into a pimpmobile..I will have the entire car plated in gold... lowered so that the car is just a couple inches of the ground.. windows tinted at 3%... and have the interrior redone in some puffy pillow-like material.

William rogers.. you do have a good point, I am kinda worried about my car having their emblems ripped off. I did that too as a child with my friends back in California... we preyed on Cadillacs...but the mother of all emblems were the Jaguars and Rolls Royce

Frank X. Morris.. thanks for your input.. I will eventually look up in my phone book and find a place. I never thought of that, but thanks!

Doing what I originally wanted is hardly considered a pimpmobile... I just want my car too look good.

Talking Understated Pimping!

Check E-Bay there are some "script" on there occasionally. Use their Search, for completed items, and you might be able to find someone who deals in it.

Try this , Maybe?

Good luck, Superfly!!!

Post Longston's maxims...

$50 spent on performance upgrades is worth far more than $500 wasted on overstated gaudy "personalization". Trust me, you've gone too far already. Where I'm coming from cool is understated, unexpected, and confident, not ostentacious, vulgar, and screaming, "look at me". That's insecurity, baby.

As I tell my 8-year-old son: "Don't waste your money on crap, save it up until you have enough to buy something that has value". Do you have more than enough cash stashed away to handle a major mechanical, or would you be cryin' the blues after spending all of your wad on "customizing" your ride, and find out you need major mechanical repairs? How about investing that money in a safe money market fund so you can save up to buy a newer or cooler MB?

If you gotta spend, put your money into substantial upgrades that improve the vehicle in real terms, not cosmetic affectations. Take a road course at a local track that will improve your skills as a driver, they usually cost around $500, and are better for you in the long run than gold plating the whole damn car ever would be.

Oh, and a word from a street-wise OG. Chumps who have lowered Benzos with gold plating, rollin' on dubs and flashin' major custom cosmetics aren't pimps, they're victims. Please flash mucho bling so we'll know just who to take it from. It saves us time having to look for you...

Scott,

Spoken like a poet! I couldn't agree more! I've NEVER seen an MB, or any other car for that matter, that didn't look ridiculous with all that gold trim.

oooooook... guess I am getting hate mail from this topic.
I don't see anything too arrogant or arrogant with gold plating some parts of the car... I seriously don't. Why would I make performance modifications on a 300sel sedan?? its a cruiser, not a racer.

I guess when I have questions on something... I will have to search the old fashion way and stay out from asking people in fear of being insulted.

Snibble,

Nobody here is trying to insult you. This is the OPEN forum, and everyone is encouraged to express their opinions here, popular or not. All of us won't always agree, and frankly, it would be pretty boring around here if we did! Please don't take offense.

Don't take this stuff too personally...nobody is questioning your tastes. True, the responses should have stayed within the realm of finding a source for you to get the plating done, as opposed to criticizing your desire to do so...

...I had a 94 Honda Passport with the "gold" package, and I thought it looked great. I had considered applying the same on my ML and on my 300E when first purchased, but changed my mind.

I think you will find that the true luxury marques have shied away from doing the gold treatment on their cars...see any Bentleys, Jaguars, or Porsches with the "treatment"? The same is true for MB.

It seems too, that the plating is turning into just another "fad", as I saw the trend of "plating" offered by the dealerships fade around the latter part of the 90's.

I think you can personalize your car however you wish, but keep it tasteful. I think the reference of "pimping" is a bit unfair, but good points were made as far as making your car more attractive to theft and vandalism.

As far as plating goes, there should be local shops that do this sort of work. Places that do tint, body customizing, and such, are places that might be able to accomodate...

Good Luck!

My neighbor has a small white toyota with the gold package. The toyota emblem is in gold and it looks really nice on the white paint. I was thinking of doing the same... however many of you think its bad taste. I don't mind people disagreeing with me, since its just a difference of oppinion, but I do mind when some people here say that I am turning it into a "pimp-mobile" and trying to act like a hard ass gangster or some crap like that. As for the gold plating I was thinking of... I will wait for a while until I make up my mind. As for now, European headlights and clear blinkers are the current upgrades I will work on. My current US version lights is dull, brittle and my right light has a crack on the bezel.. so sooner or later I will have fix that up.

Lightbulb Solid Gold A#*holes!

"OPEN DISCUSSION, Discuss anything you want to here including cars other than Mercedes", There is apparently no shortage of individuals who believe that this title and description do not reference the range of topics for discussion by interpret it as free range where they can ignore the obvious intent of the thread's poster and indulge in their "I'm a legend in my own mind" delusions. Its' obvious that some respondents where unable to understand the difference between what was asked " where or how can I obtain an accessory?" and what they presumed the hidden question to be "do you think that I can be responsible for making my own decisions and choices about what I do with my own property?" You've really got to wonder what motivates this kind behavior? To have one’s tastes categorized as ridiculous and to be lectured as some would an "8 year old" can only be insulting.

How anyone best manages their financial priorities is most likely far beyond the capacity of such presumptuous and opinionated blowhards. What would be funny if not for being so pathetic is that the most long winded apparently are able to read between the lines and find that which does not exist. “Trust me, you've gone too far already” we can only assume this refers to possessing the temerity and daring to think about it! OG must stand for Overblown Gasbag! How could this character element been left out of a bio that includes “Aficionado, Bon Vivant, Entrepreneur, Impresario, Maven, Raconteur... “

“Ridiculous”, once someone has the opportunity to peruse the homepage of the source of such an opinion, any question as to its’ merit should be answered, “has-beens that never where, hair band pretender clone wannabes, dictating style and taste for any other”, could be the definition of “ridiculous”.

“Nobody here is trying to insult you. This is the OPEN forum, and everyone is encouraged to express their opinions here, popular or not. All of us won't always agree, and frankly, it would be pretty boring around here if we did! Please don't take offense.”

That said, Hey Snibble for fifteen years I worked as a valet in and around the largest concentration of wealth and power in the world, Palm Beach. I had the opportunity to drive the luxury vehicles of some of the most wealthy, influential and sophisticated people from around the world and more than a few shared your taste in cars and accoutrements, so take your hard earned money and make yourself happy! Just one more unsolicited, stinking opinion.
