While I don't know where you can get the accessories you are looking for, I'd like to weigh in on what I think of the idea.

I second the contention that gold trim will make your Benz look more like a pimpmobile.

While I know the percieved scope of this thread is in assisting Snibble in obtaining these items, I would also like to think that posters would also give him an idea of whether or not its a good idea. If I posted on the stereo forum asking where I could obtain a crappy stereo, I would hope that those posters would feel free to inform me that I was trying to find a piece of crap. In this case I am following the golden rule, "Do Unto Snibble as I would have Snibble do unto myself."

And to Snibble, I would not characterize anything said here as hateful, but instead as honest.

Billybob,

Nobody was talking to YOU, much less insulting YOU...why the hostility? This is the OPEN FORUM, for EVERYONES' OPINIONS. So I guess now you've expressed yours.
Take a f***ing valium or something.

Hi Snibble,

I don't think anyone intended to insult you, and I know I didn't, so if I did, I apologize...and I don't know what Billybob's problem is at all. Needs to relax, maybe. He and I have never spoken, and he doesn't know me, yet he judges me. Whatever...

Anyway, who cares what I say or anyone else says...If you are happy with your car, then that's what's important. Not everyone will like your taste in modifications, and that's OK. I'm sure there are many who don't share my tastes, and that's fine too.

The majority of members here can take an opinion with a grain of salt, and discuss things rationally. Others obviously cannot.

I, for one, am glad to be here, and I'm glad to have you here.

Peace,

Mike

Hello Snibble,
My white 89 300E had a plated badge, star, and wheel caps when I bought it. I agree with you that done in moderation the gold on white looks pretty sharp. I might have left mine that way if it was a good plating job (it wasn't). But I tell ya looking out from behind the drivers seat at the shine on that silver star, it just feels right. Sorry Snibble I digress. My only concern would be the quality of the plating. To me it dosen't appear to weather well. And it's all about shine. In my line of work I do alot of plating but it's not really exposed to the elements. Like anything you get what you pay for so I wouldn't shop for this service on price alone. Open up the yellow pages, look under plating and I bet you find a host of companies that provide this service in your area. Good luck!

Lightbulb

telefunkin,

That's something I didn't think of...Gold is a MUCH softer coating than chrome. I imagine you'd have to have a good clear coat over it to prevent it from tarnishing, and eventuallly wearing off.

Angry Here We Go Again...

Where's the sense of humor and decency gone to around here? Is everyone so damn jumpy that they can't see another viewpoint without feeling that they're being attacked?

You know, I have always tried to give an honest opinion to members here that is equivalent to what I would provide to my son, brother, father, or uncle. What I say is mostly opinion backed by personal experience and what I consider to be sound advice.

The point made about someone buying a crappy sound system was right on the money as regards my motives. I consider this to be a community, like a family. I have made some good friends here, and have always tried to be a valuable contribiutor to these forums. I do not harshly and unfairly judge people, I always try to provide factual and sage advice, but when I do, I shoot straight from the hip. I also temper my comments with my own personal, and sometimes cynical brand of humor. Some people find that refreshing, some are so unaccustomed to that brand of honesty that they assume that I must be trying to insult them, or insult their intelligence. If that's your problem, please click on the link below my signature...

Snibble, I gave you the best advice I had to provide. Sorry if you found it to be insulting or offensive. As MikeMover pointed out, it was on the money, and not intended to put you down. As for performance, I didn't mean racing equipment. I meant improving the vehicle in any way possible that is tangible. If you have done everyrthing you can to make the car all it can be, and you are looking for further improvements you can make, I would not recommend gold plating. If you're just doing it because you think you think it looks cool, I think you'll regret it later and see it as a waste of money. I am not comparing you to an 8-year-old. I am comparing my advice to you as the same that I WOULD GIVE MY OWN SON! I think that has more value than a solid gold Mercedes...

BillyBob, There's an old saying "choose your enemies and your battles wisely". I will be taking your comments to private mail, as you (and snibble) don't provide a viable email address. As long as I have been a member here, I have always suggested that anyone who misunderstands another members comments or intentions should email them privately off of the forums.

On that topic, here's some wise advice for the new membership who are participating here. If you don't have one, or haven't provided it for fear of getting spammed, get and post a link to an operable email address for use on these forums. There are still several that are free, including that old chestnut, Hotmail.

Next, if you see someone's opinion that you misunderstand, or feel you must take issue with, email them directly, so the rest of us don't have to see your personal problems in print (it can work against you). Most of these issues are pure misunderstanding of another person's point of view, and can be resolved off of the forums.

Next, keep your sense of humor, not everything posted here is face value, some of us have a very well developed sense of humor, albeit sarcastic and cynical in some cases, so please join in and share yours with us.

And finally, remember that this is one forum on the internet where personal character assination and insults are both uncalled for, and not tolerated. It's the best and fastest way to get a thread locked or deleted.

Hello Mike,
You know someone out there has got to know how to do this job right. In my case the gold plating looked like sh#t on a white horse, and man that aint never good!

Snibble,

My E320 has a "gold package" which includes gold front and rear stars as well as gold stars on the center hubs. Since I bought the car used, I presume that the original owner had this done by the Mercedes dealer in the San Diego area.

I feel that the "gold package" complements the white exterior with the chrome wheels.

When I bought the Mercedes 2 years ago the gold stars were getting a bit dull. I used some chrome polish which removed the tarnish and brought back the shine.

My neighbor had a "gold package" on his black Acura 3.2 TL which included gold badging to the front and rear of the car as well as a gold front grill. I feel that the gold front grill was a bit overkill but since its not my car it not for me to judge.

I was actually being a little facetious when I made the pimpmobile reply.

I really don't mind the 'gold package'. I think it looks a little garish agains black, but looks quite nice against white.

notice.. i have been saying my car is arctic white (147) and the gold would look nice in my oppinion since I had an image of it on photoshop. If it was black.. then it would be a bit too arrogant.

I think it would depend mostly on the color of the car . Gold plated emblems would look great on a white car. I personally believe that gold plated emblems go well with lexus and cadillac. German cars strike me as business like no nonsense aesthetics.

I must confess that I'm actually a bit biased on the subject, because I'm not a fan of gold or brass on anything...jewelry, cars, even doorknobs. I just prefer chrome/silver/stainless/nickel/polished aluminum/etc.

I can actually visualize it on a white car, though...As long as it wasn't overdone. I agree with rjnonnie, the grille would be way out there!

White, black, emerald, midnight blue, whatever...gold looks okay if applied sparingly, but tasteless if overdone, regardless of the vehicle color.

My Passport was black, and the gold treatment was relegated to the emblem on the grille, the "Passport" emblems on the front quarters, and the "Honda" emblem on the rear door hatch. It looked great!

I will contend, that after one winter, the emblems had to be touched up, but they haven't tarnished since (my bro-in-law has it now).

As I stated earlier, I had considered doing the same to my ML and E, but I had seen one black ML with the gold star on the rear and wasn't impressed. I thought about doing the trunk emblems on the 300E, simply because the car came with chrome aftermarket 8-hole wheels...and each of the lug nut covers have the gold MB star bolted on. They have all tarnished and are in need of touching up.

The PO apparently was in the process of "pimpin" it up, but the dealership removed the chrome fender trim before I purchased the car, leaving nice little holes along the fender lips where the rivets formerly resided.

And when I posted on this forum about reinstalling the trim to hide the indentions, there was no shortage of opinions here! Needless to say, I've left the fenders alone.

I do have a chrome front plate with a gold star on it...

...the pic is a bit dark, but check out the "gold package" on MY "big-pimpin" Benzo!!!
