well, you gotta admit, at that price, it's likely a foreclosure that you can flip.

I actually like a lot of cars. Here are some modern examples ... VW TDI (Golf/Jetta). Tesla Roadster. Tesla Model S. Fiat 500. Subaru Impreza. Mazda MX5/Miata. The Scion/Subaru RWD thing. Toyota Prius. mid-2000s C-classes with manual trans. BMW 1-series. Mazda CX5 and Mazda5 moomyvan. Honda Fit.

Older cars -- I had a soft spot for 80s and early 90s Euro cars. I tend to enjoy basic, straightforward, and relatively simple, but I'm not a universal naysayer.

My taste in cars in many ways is similar to a hippie chick's taste in shoes.

There are chips available that can wake up an eta a bit. Here's one: E28 528e, E30 325e Turner Motorsport Conforti Performance Chip - Turner Motorsport

It's also worth noting that the M20 has a timing belt, so the first item of business would be to change it (and the water pump and tensioner). It is an interference engine.

Oh yes, and there used to be a caveat that hex-headed head bolts on M20s were at risk of breaking off and punching holes in the head casting as they bounced around loose in the valve train. BMW has male torx head bolts available to replace them. Maybe the service has been done on this car -- it's been a known issue for some time.

Around here a car like that would be so dissolved underneath I'd have trouble finding a solid point to jack it up on.

Wrong-o: I've seen quite a few BMWs of similar age which were solid underneath and mostly East Coast cars. Rustproofing was already pretty good.

$250 for an E28 with a 5-speed? Shame on you if it's not already in the driveway .
