She was still somewhat groggy when my sister & I left, but didn't seem to be in as much pain as after the first surgery. The surgeon who did this surgery is the same one who did the first one. He is the head of neurosurgical oncology at Mass General, so we figure that he is probably overqualified for this . All of the other doctors, nurses, et cetera that we have spoken to have a very high opinion of him, and he is just an extremely relaxing and caring personality. Anyway, I'm going to bed now and will get up tomorrow at five -- we want to leave the house tomorrow before 5:30 to try to get ahead of the traffic .
are they taking it out and replacing it with something else? Or did they remove it all together and create some other solution? (like that coral that bone can grow through) or some such

My best wishes for your mom. It’s painful to see one’s mom go through serious problems. You have to know that she thanks you more than you’ll ever realize for being there.

They're just leaving the hole there for now -- it's sort of behind her ear by about an inch on the lower driver's side of the head. The surgeon said that they definitely would not put in another plate right away because they need to fight the infection first -- the plate makes it harder to blood flow to the area, keeping out antibiotics and white blood cells. He said that she can have one put in later if she wants, but that they think it's okay to go without it in this case because it is in a place such that it would be very unlikely to be hit in such a way as to cause injury other that the normal ow-I-just-banged-my-head variety . She said that she'll think about whether she wants the plate back in -- on one hand, she didn't like the idea of a metal plate in her head and they can apparently make infections easier to kick up, but on the other, knowing that there is no bone protecting your brain in a certain small area of the head may not be a fun thought either... we'll see.

She was feeling good enough to do math with me in the morning, which was good... however, she was a bit confused through part of it, which is not like her at all. Overall, she is much better that she was before the first surgery... but she is still definitely a post-surgery patient. It sounds like she'll be discharged on Thursday.

The doctor dealing with treating the infection is her Lyme doctor -- the most thorough person we have ever met, always on top of everything and able to make a marine drill sergeant curl up in a corner .

1/2 of the Luna fleet in Boston -- for some reason, I really like this picture .

Well, is 4.5 better?

Not catching winks in the Buick -- it's almost magical, floating along whisper-quietly, cutting through the dark of the night with a long hood ahead of you, sitting in a cloud of wood trim and velvet with Finnish hymns playing in the cassette player. It holds me in awe in such a way that I am relaxed but nowhere near sleepy.

Thank you.

OK, so we got back from the hospital on Saturday afternoon.. my mother is getting antibiotics through a PICC line, a line that runs into a blood vessel in your arm and goes up to right above your heart. It allows you to take stronger doses of antibiotics than normal because the much larger blood vessel at the top of the heart allows for a stronger antibiotic to be given -- more blood there to dilute it. She has a pump attached to her that pumps medicine into her every four hours for an hour.

We were delayed in the hospital because the bacteria is a slow-growing one that took them a while to culture and because the original PICC line that went in her right arm created a blood clot in less than a day, forcing them to remove it and install one in her left arm, after which it took them a while to write an order allowing medicine to be given through the new line (the doctor had to confirm that it was correctly done, but he was in surgery as was every other neurosurgeon team in the hospital).

She will be on a heavy dose of antibiotics for six weeks, which makes her feel not-so-great, as we learned when she had strong antibiotics (through a PICC) to treat her Lyme.

We've already had enough neighbors and friends from church offer to bring us meals that we are looking at not having to cook for at least a week and a half. That will make life a lot easier.

I hope your mum has a speedy recovery, if you have a home health or other servicing place, they can de-clot a Picc line, or so I am told.. the single lumen ones tend to clot more, I've never had issue with a double or more lumen picc before. Thoughts are with you

Oh -- sorry for the misunderstanding -- it wasn't the line that got a clot, it was her arm, but that's good to know.

I've been mostly offline for the last ten days (coincidentally my first trip to Mass, most of which was spent on the Cape), but please add my sympathies to those already expressed, and I'll be praying for a speedy and complete recovery for your mom, and peace for the her and the rest of your family. Give her a hug for me, and thanks for sharing, Jooseppi.
