I never saw anyone do that up there. Maybe they did it though...I was 17-18 ,so my attention was more testosterone based in thought (girls)

I never would have even thought of it, until someone posted a thread on here about Mongolian block heaters a few years ago. I think the thread is in diesel discussion. Why did you try it? I guess it's a good idea if you are in a remote location...

I would be worried about starting the whole thing on fire. I guess you would want a fairly clean engine.(no leaks)

I did see the trucking companies use huge thermal tarps whereby they would put the tarp over the whole front of the semi and then use one of those propane construction heaters to pipe heat under the tarp. I seem to remember they would sometimes have the truck running as well. I think one of the guys I used to work with (ex-truck driver) use to talk about belly tarping the truck as well for the cold trips. I always assumed he meant tarp the under carrige area of the motor to savour all the heat possible?

Thanks for the reminder on that one....any precautionary advice?

When I was a kid on the farm during the winter of 1981-82, we had -40F wind chill temps. Dad had a number of Edison socket heating elements that he would use on job site. He ran a couple of them under his truck and draped old mover's blankets around the base of the truck to warm it up enough to be able to start in the morning.

Sometime in the very late 1980's and into possibly 1990, we had some impressive cold snaps that gave us -15 to -20 windchill temps. I had to use that same tactic on my car until I decided to get a dipstick heater. Since then, I've tried to make sure that at least one of my vehicles have a block heater. Currently, the Tahoe and my F-250 have block heaters.

The coldest I have seen here without consideration of wind chill is -30F. That
s pretty cold! To get your car started in that you need the stars to align.

And I thought you were going to say, that it is so cold I have time to pull the frozen treats that my pup finds on his walk, from it's mouth before he has time ingest them.

It was -40C/F without windchill. Fortunately, both times (one week each!) there was little to no wind.

Favorite parts of the trips:
  • Watching the locals go outside for a cigarette. Without bothering to put their jackets on.
  • Saunas (most of them, anyway) in the executive conference rooms at Nokia.

Least favorite part of the trips:
  • One particular sauna event. Let's just leave it at "300 pound naked drunken Finn who thought he could dance" and leave it at that.

I'm looking at adding this to my Duramax! 15 minutes at high idle, and the cab is nice and toasty!

The 560 idled for like 10-15 minutes this AM and was nice and cozy.

I put this in it...
Amazon.com: Avital 4103LX Remote Start System with Two 4-Button Remote: Car Electronics

Not sure if its compatible for diesels.. If so.. its going into the 300D as well!

I am just exagerating, I'd be cold in my gitch too....but not as cold as you.
It's true, you get used to your area. I spent a winter in Eastern WA, just south of Penticton, BC - not as cold as say, N. Dakota but much colder than Seattle and way colder than these parts and I got by just fine. Almost liked it. Half the time I was sleeping in my van under a down comforter, wearing longjohns.

The climate around here is appealing. Not nearly as hot in summer as Sacramento and often 50s and 60s in the winter.

The 190E looked like this the other morning. Temps went down to 38F

Turned the key and headed off. Nothing to plow through.

Got to document the electric heater element in the side mirrors automatically come on when I started the car in these temps. Cool!
