Back to the original topic....the discussion of how accurate war movies are.
Frank Haskell was an aid to Union General Gibbons at Gettysburg, and in the Words of that General, Haskell did more to repel the attack than any other man. In his account of the battle, Haskell made to following observation which remains as true today as it was when he penned it.

Lieutenant Frank Haskell concluded that “a full account of the battle as it was will never, can never be made. Who could sketch the changes, the constant shifting of the bloody panorama? It is not possible.” In the end, he predicted, “out of the chaos of trash and falsehood that the newspapers hold, out of the disjointed mass of reports, out of the traditions and tales that come down from the field, some eye that never saw the battle will select, and some pen will write what will be named the history.”
He went on to observe that --and with that, if we are living must be content

I think there are some scenes in Apocalypse Now that come pretty close, especially when you watch it on the big screen, maybe not in historical accuracy but in showing the complete insanity of war.

A friend of mine that did two years in Viet Nam said that Platoon got a number of things right and a few things very wrong. The tough part is to figure out which are real and which are there to move the story.

I did speak to one old Battle of the Bulge Vet about Band of Brothers and he was very impressed with how correct it all was. He pointed out he still remembered the cold and the constant fear, but how can you show that in a film?

As as aside Tom Hanks was an Executive Producer on Band of Brothers and he is known to be quite a history buff, so I would bet he was insisting on accuracy or at least as much as he could get.
