our Mac died

I would get the perpetual spinning pinwheel. Brought it to an indy Mac repair guy. he said the would use an external hard drive and it ran fine. The internal HD is toast along with about 6 months worth of pictures.

We are going back to the PC. The Mac was more expensive to buy but it is not anymore reliable.

There are companies that specialize in retrieving info in cases like this.

Google 'hard drive damaged' for some sites.......

Sooo . . . a hard drive swap is more expensive than buying a whole new PC? Even with an iMac, getting to the internal drive is about a 30 min DIY. Then you'd have a choice of installing more TB and/or SSD.

How old is it? My brothers video card went out in his early '11 Macbook Pro. He has apple care and they refused to warranty it because he removed the cd rom drive and put in an SSD. I worry about my late '11 now but it should be covered for a little while longer. Better do a backup tonight.

By now, give the extremely low cost of external storage and media, any home computer user that is not running some automated backup procedure is . . . well, going to get what they deserve eventually. Apple users have Time Capsule/Time Machine, Windows users have their backup system.

x2.

One of the best investments I made was buying a Time Capsule. Automated backup FTW.

I just heard back from the Mac tech.

he said $70 for a new hard drive + a new os. $150 total (labor included). I had no idea it could be so cheap.

we're keeping it!

I actually bought a time capsule but we could not get it to work with the dated os. with the new os, we should be all set. I hope

The pictures can be easily retrieved assuming it's actually a physical problem with the hard drive. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, and be sure to collect the old "dead" drive after replacement.

Computer's really aren't that complex once you get down to it-don't be intimidated!

yeah. i would assume it includes the diagnosis time.

$80 is about what I charge for a lawn mower repair anyways so it's fair. It would probably take him 15 minutes to do. Besides, it also takes me just 15 minutes to fix a mower anyway.

It's going to take more than an hour to swap HDs and reinstall an OS. Sounds very fair to me.

Also, if I may add, my little repair shop officially opens for the season on March 1.

I will have to assess parts inventory and clean up a little before the doors open.

I just found out that a guy also has a lawn mower shop in town (I did not know this). Unfortunately his name is "Ken" which rhymes with "Ben". Hopefully that will not be a problem. Ken has been in business for 40 years (Ben just 5) but he did not have a website until this year (obviously to compete with me).

I plan to step up my marketing. Baby needs some shoes! or a vacation to Iceland this summer!
