Generals prepare to fight future wars by preparing for the previous war.

In hindsight we're all brilliant sob's.

The trick is to accurately predict which of the infinite futures is the most probable and amongst those probabilities, which one we will follow.

For those who suggest that the future will involve armies, navies, and air forces as previously deployed, I would suggest that our prognostication skills are retarded.

You joke actually exposes China's weak spot. If a large number of People become dissastified with the Government there it could paralize China.

But, as far as I know the USA is not working that angle. The big wigs are to busy counting the Money they are making with trade from China.

If we keep our Military strong and do not become an easy Target I think nature Will Take its course and the People in China will eventually demand a change in their Government.
Don't bet on it. Do they put a hydrophone in the water and announce "training exercise under way-do not attack" ?

One must then ask, why did they surface?
They wanted us to know they could do it. They were showing us how superior they are.

It is worth a lot in Propaganda in their own country and makes us look like an Ass to the Allies we said we would protect in our various Treaties.

Why the hell didn't you share this with GW back in 2002 before he economically creamed us???

The American army has become one of the entitlement programs, I'm glad the President and his secretary of defense are (licensing, oops) listening to the tea party; even bigots have good ideas sometimes.

If you mix multiple languages on a daily base it can become hard and spell check is not always my friend.

Right. Because an American trucker counted 10 thousand armored vehicles while delivering food to a Chinese military base in Mexico, or the other one, that a housing development complete with billboard is actually the Chinese base. Let's not forget the 3rd one, that unbeknownst to the Canadians, that 300 thousand Chinese troops are based on their soil for an invasion of the US, and a further 600 thousand troops are in Mexico.

According to countless crackpot conspiracy theories, the Chinese have nearly a million men ready to invade the US, and the best part is they figured out how to do this with Canada, the US, or Mexico realizing it was about to happen, AND let's not forget that they feed, pay, and equip all these men secretly while maintaining a military budget less than a seventh of the US.

Sometimes you have to view things a little realistically. How about substantiating the Chinese troops in Mexico for one.

No doubt. I can't see us doing the same like TJ said. Don't float.

Actually the nukes are irrelevant and the old diesel electrics are not the problem. It's the new proton membrane exchange hydrogen fuel cell powered subs that pose the threat. It was one of these apparently that spooked the US carrier group. They can stay submerged for several weeks and are quieter than nuke boats though of course slower.

They are a German technology incorporated in the latest class of U-boats.
Last year U-32 established a new record for non-nuclear submarines with 18 days in submerged transit across the atlantic without snorkelling on its way to the US to take part in exercises with the US navy. America had requested the Germans send it because of the concern over the new threat these submarines pose, as evidenced by the Chinese escapade. The Chinese subs use these German engines.

So if the Chinese do field a large fleet of these subs it alters the situation significantly in the asian waters by providing a significant increase in danger to US carrier groups, the backbone on which US power rests with all the implications that has for our allies, treaties and the balance of power in the region.

If the US is no longer capable of keeping a lid on China's ambitions in the region I think that the idea that peace will be ensured by a surfeit of crappy chinese goods in walmart is facile to put it mildly.

And if the US forces are reduced to such a poor level an engagement in Asia opens up a whole can of worms elsewhere when the US is too weak to intervene in other theaters.

Making do with new financial realities sounds great in theory, until actual reality comes knocking on your door. But that seems to be something the US is loathe to learn.

You got me on the fuel cell technology. I hadn't heard about that and it sure would be quiet as compared to diesel electric or nuke. Cheaper than nuke, I'll bet. Probably a lot safer.

The Germans sailed one across the Atlantic without recharge? Thank goodness they didn't have that in 1939!! Smart bastards.

That is a threat to most of the Northern Pacific. It would affect Pacific trade with the USA. How much longer will Japan wait to change their constitution?

Money trumps conquering a country. Why waste all the effort to take over when you can just do business and keep both sides happy?

As for the mystery sub thing, they're obviously showing off. If it was meant to be aggressive why didn't they start sinking ships?
