My dad was given two donkeys once. He had to get rid of them because they were mean as a mofo!

The soil conditions there are perfect for Pecans and there is an extremely high concentration of major commercial orchards.

Agriculturally the land in San Saba and to the south is hilly, rocky and brushy. It can serve as cattle land, but at a low stocking rate as compared to points east in Texas.

That same hilly, rocky, brushy country, OTOH, makes for very good hunting country. The value of that scraggly land is much higher than one would expect, almost solely based on its hunting value.

Much of the land to the north of San Saba makes better pasture land and better fields for growing feed. This makes for some cattle production, but sucks hind teat as compared to the money generated from pecans and hunting.

Yes, my grand dads place on the blanco river was a cattle ranch, but did have some very nice stands of native pecans. Native pecans have minimal commercial value. San Saba has orchard after orchard full of grafted paper shell trees of many popular varieties.

Unfortunately on my end of the state where are cattle stocking rates are drastically higher than San Saba, we can't really grow pecan trees. For them to do well requires rich top soil to a minimum level of about six feet with good soil drainage below that. The top soil on my place, although rich has clay about 14 to 18 inches deep. Making for great grass production, but won't support pecan trees.

I hope none of the cattlemen that I know don't ever hear you say that they look like a dirt farmer or a pecan farmer.

BTW, if you use the word pee-can in San Saba they won't know what you're talking about. There it's pa-con.
That's about as accurate description as anyone could come up with.

Deer hunting is a MAJOR industry in the San Saba area. You can get a lease there for about $4,000 for the season, and a lot of small businessmen go in together to lease a camp that is really nothing more than an almost level small area of land they can put campers on. Bring your own drinking water, but there is usually a well for non-drinking water.

And watch out for the hogs. Hog hunts are popular since there is no season on them and everybody wants them dead.

There is not even a cattle sale barn in San Saba.

I also would not categorize Tommy Lee Jones as a cowboy. A horse person and enthusiast, yes. Cowboy, no.
I doubt that Tommy Lee would worry too much about your assumptions concerning him. His real ranching operation is on 42,000 acres in west Texas and he takes it very much to heart.

If you want to really feel at home there then visit the Episcopal church some sunday. Very quaint, very original, very early Texas. Watch out for the tree that is growing in the middle of the road. I guess they would cut it down if it were not hundreds of years old.

I'm sure that he wouldn't be concerned about your assumptions either, since they were not only incorrect, but also an insult to a man like him.

BTW, my favorite Tommy Lee movie was "The Good Ole Boys." A made for TNT movie where he PLAYED THE PART OF A COWBOY.

If his large place is a cattle ranch and you choose not to insult Tommy Lee, refer to him as a Cattleman instead of a cowboy.

I feel an internet duel coming ,the streets have been cleared with only a faint wind blowing a dusty small street as the townsfolk look on.

I'm thinking he lost part of his mind for this role. A healthy young guy purposely loosing 50 pounds for a role? I would think pudging out, a la De Niro for raging bull would be safer than shedding a good deal of muscle mass cause MM didn't look like had 50 lbs of fat to get rid of.

Maybe so. Maybe that explains how a kid from San Saba ends up as Al gores room mate at Harvard.

It might very well be part or all of the explanation. Malnutrition can cause some serious behavior change.

That said, one would hope that such an intentional starvation in such a situation would be under close medical supervision.

Oh it makes some sense. Seeing it was strange. Someone getting up with a long, sorta false sounding story about how they are their own hero is weird in my world.

Talked to a movie buff friend of mine today who didn't watch the oscars. I said that McConaughey's speech was weird. his immediate reply was that mcConaughey is not normal. So, you and i are not the only ones to find him odd.

I get this type of nonsense out of people with far more stroke in this world than you. I just rip them out of my phone book and advise them they will have to get along without my assistance from now on.

I hear that you have such ill-composed features that people in parking lots mistake you for their Pontiac Aztecs.
