Lesson learned, isn't it? This is what I am saying. How long it takes to unlock the car YOURSELF? It does not matter you have done it once or hundred times.

They are able to start it up and test all the features. I am not going to stop doing this when I'm busy over one incident. You don't expect someone to steal a car in broad daylight with no plate. I post the story on facebook and tons of stories come out of the woodwork, all petty crimes. The lesser cast off members will name drop if they run out of gas saying take the bill to my brother who owns Kansas Can (recyclers) and he will pay you back. Other examples but they are all petty crimes.

The longer I'm in this business, the more racist I become. Really, I admit I've become more racist from TONS of experience.

I have an opportunity to get out of this business next year and it's becoming increasingly likely that I'll do it for my sanity's sake.

Take off 3 spark plug wires under the hood and tell the shoppers if they want to start the car up youll need to first dismantle the security system. This will buy you some time as they sit behind the wheel working all the pretty little gadgets. The So called professional theives will work together ,one keeping you occupied as the other plunders. The couple you speak of ,did they end up buying a car?

No, but they were a mixed couple Asian and Hispanic. They had called on the X5 earlier and wanted to trade in their 3 series. New baby, needed more room.

Sorry this happened to you.

“The gypsies are coming, the old people say,

To buy little children and take them away.”

All Sicilians are in the mafia, right?

All Roma are thieves.

No Sicilians here. Every "Roma" I have encountered here was trying to screw me or someone else over. My previous encounters have only been annoyances. The first few months I was in business, I had one show up with his whole family. Wanted to drive the car. I said I need to come along. He said he wanted his whole family to come so there was no room. I said no. He asked if my family could wait inside the office. No, I will lock up when we go. Clearly aggravated that I wasn't falling for it, he offered 1/3 of my asking price saying that was the most I would ever get for it. That was the end of that.

Next was a good deal showing on craigslist for a BMW Z3. Went to look at the car, immediately thought Oh $hit when I realized where I was at a gypsy house with cash. Turned around and left.

When I was working at Joe Self, one of them took a chevy truck on a drive and swapped the new tires for used. Another family came and tried to trick the manager into selling a well equipped truck for a work truck price. Doesn't work with a computerized inventory. They just looked stupid.

Ah the three ways to become a racist- real life experience, being taught and natural human nature. You've apparently learned the hard way.

Other than gypsies, most of my "racism" is pretty benign. I assume every black person who comes on my lot has bad credit. 99 times out or 100 I am correct. An Asian or Indian comes on my lot, I'm in for one hell of a lowball nasty negotiation... 99 times out of 100 I am correct. A woman comes on the lot, I don't show her any stick shifts. Of course white people steal, have horrible credit, and lowball as well, but no predictable pattern.

Your observations are spot on.

Read "Working" by Studs Terkel. In one chapter he interviews at great length a car salesman. You ought to read it.

Introduction to Journalism

Nothing has changed in the last 30-40+ years (unfortunately) about people living in this country, as regards the racial aspects you observed in car buying.

It's not racism, simply the observed truth.

Even if politically correct people are eager to cry "Racism!!" about it.

I see it all the time in my job as well. The Indians are the worst they only care about price and are brutal to negotiate with. Black people are fine, but they are sue happy.

I also dislike young white couples in nice cars with nice cloths. It seems like 9 times out of 10 they are un mortgageable because of student loan, CC, and car lease debt. Of course they both have entry level high end car leases, ie BMW 3 series. OTOH this profile is my sweet spot for renters, and just about all of my renters have nicer vehicles than I do...

I judge people by their cars and it seems to hold true. I hate BMW owners they are always broke, people with older Toyota's and trucks are usually a safe bet, as are Subaru owners.

Cars say a lot about a persons financial priorities. The only time I expect to see expensive cars is when the value of the house is very high, than its expected.
