What's your take on the rash of new laws which seek to restrict early voting?
Why do we need to vote early?

Some people need to absentee vote, that is almost always 'early'.

Absentee voting is not early voting. There have been provisions got absentee voting for a long time
I might favor extending the period for voting IF we had increased security to insure only properly registered and legally eligible citizens voted. Otherwise it's an invitation for mischief

Don't know. Ask the republican lawyer group who conducted the study.

"On Thursday, Governor Walker vetoed a portion of the bill that limited early voting hours to 45 per week, but he kept in place the weekend ban and a cap at 55 hours. To handle the number of early voters who showed up in 2012, Milwaukee would have 11 seconds to process each ballot under the new law, the city’s Democratic leaders said."

How did we survive for so long with a simple "election DAY"?

When I first started voting I voted a my local precinct. The total number of voters might have been as low as hundreds. Enough of these spread all over town made it easy to get all the votes in and counted.

The right to vote used to be respected. (For those that had it anyway) and now people are expendable widgets.

Perhaps, at that time, the voters earned the respect of the politicians.
