As far as the Jasper case, the key element was RANDOM and horrific violence, not so much hate. Would it have been better if they'd said "we don't like the look of this white dweeb sitting at the bar" and drag them to death? Doubt it.

The message should be: do senseless violence, regardless of who the victim is, fry for it.

If they killed the guy because he was white then it would be a hate crime. The crime in Jasper was not quite so random as the killers were driving through the black part of town. Were they looking for a victim? The jury seemed to think so.

I agree with you on plea bargains. Cops love them because it lets them clear case loads cheap and DA's love them because it lets them pump up their conviction rate. The poor sap that gets railroaded? No one seems to care about him.
