Truck driver hit and killed by manhole cover

What are the odds? When your number's up, it's up. Sad.

Quote:
The 35-year-old tractor-trailer driver was going westbound in the middle lane of the Cross Bronx Expressway near Jerome Avenue at about 5:30 a.m., according to police. A manhole cover went through the front windshield and hit him in the head.

No kidding. They said it exploded. My guess is some methane gas or the like blew up in a cavity and flung the cover upward.

Reminds me a similarly weird freak thing in Seattle some years back. They built a convention center over the freeway downtown, I forget ,30 years ago maybe. A few years later, sometime in late winter IIRC, some place under the structure a large chunk of ice that had frozen in some odd perch from dripping water thawed enough to fall loose and hit a car killing the driver.

That road is a disaster. It's a little better now, as some of it has been repaved. The worst part was the start of the WB roadway, where ruts between lanes were almost a foot tall. I always hope for some traffic when on the XB, as it gives time to avoid all the potholes and keeps the wheels of the truck on the ground when I traverse all the "jumps" in the pavement. 25-30 MPH is a safe speed.

Ya got a lot of those on the ranch? Seems like more of a cityslicker problem. 'Course, I'm not quite sure what sort of load would be needed to take one of those out. Not likely to be anything handy for use in a sidearm. Maybe you ought to attend the upcoming auction of the Littlefield collection.

Imagine that foot deep potholes in one of the areas with highest tax rates in the country. Time to get a government who can keep the roads open.

About 20-25 years ago there was an accident where the drive shaft broke which jackknifed the shaft into the oncoming lane. The picture in the local paper showed half of a drive shaft sticking through a the windshield into the steering wheel area. Spearchucking the driver. We are very rural.
