I hadn't actually tested the MAF signal because I couldn't find the multimeter that I have that reads Hz... however, I just found it, so I'll do that today.

Thanks for the tip on the oil pump drive gear gasket -- I remember seeing that in some stuff I was reading about the job.

I secured the tubing ( what I added) to a 5 gallon pail. The hose was coiled at the bottom so there wasn't even any splash to reach the rag covering the pail. Not my first time at a rodeo

I was safe in the driver's seat.

If you look near the coil packs - you will find a black rectangle piece with the GM logo on it, it would be fastened by 2 screws, that is the MAP sensor.

I think I may have found it. Is it this black thing between the coils and the firewall? It has two wires running to it, one vacuum line running to it from the intake, and one vacuum line running into some other location.

This is what it looks like when removed (more pics attached):

Wait a minute... wouldn't a MAP have three wires -- a power wire, a ground wire, and a signal wire (like a MAF)? This has two wires and two vac lines, so it almost looks more like a source of vacuum for some accessory or another that gets shut on and off.

The thing infront of the coil packs is the MAP sensor, its mounted in its correct orientation the wire connector and hose pipe for it points down.

I'll bet you've got one, even the OBD2 cars with MAFs had both for some reason on the 3800s.

edit maybe not, I got on rock auto, and they don't list a MAP for your car, just a really bizarre looking MAF sensor.

I've looked for it and can't find it. Also, the FSM I have covers both the 3.1 and 2.2, and while it talks of the MAP in the "Rough, Unstable, or Incorrect Idling" section for the 2.2, it doesn't mention it for the 3.1.

the 3.4 GM also uses both MAP and MAF - one determines engine load and EGR activity while one measures the air being pulled in.
