Actually, Vronsky, I may be willing to cut a deal with you. My daughter is studying in Sweden this year. We plan to visit her next April May or June. I'd be willing to loan you one of my vehicles for your trip if you loan me one of your vehicles for my trip.

I notice in the 'fine print' of the rental websites I've seen huge additional drop off charges : are these (extra) drop off costs normal ??

Newark seems indeed better for the return flight. Would you say that San Francisco of San Diego might be better as our departure point, instead of LAX ?

Best Regards,

Yes, in my experience there are always huge drop off charges when returning cars to different locations than from where you rented it from.

LAX usually has the cheapest flights, but if you can find a cheaper ticket at a different airport, then go for it. Locally,we have LAX, SNA (John Wayne), ONT (Ontario), Long Beach, Burbank.

Don't forget about PSP If he's connecting in NY or Newark, LAX isn't always cheaper. I've seen very cheap flights to Santa Ana sometimes, and car rental there is similarly priced to LAX.

Good point. I've never flow in or out of Palm Springs, but I've read they're adding flights, while Ontario is losing flights.

Pricing on tickets is so random. While LAX is usually the cheapest airport locally, it's not always.

I prefer BUR, personally if I can get it cheaply. I fly out of LGA since it's closer to me than Kennedy or Newark, so no direct flights further West than Denver -- stopover isn't an issue.

Burbank is nice because the airport terminal has no jetways and is TINY. No security line to speak of -- they also pull up two sets of stairs to the aircraft and board/unboard from both ends, so no waiting in line like an idiot. You can go between the aircraft and entrance in five minutes. Architects got it right in the 1940s when the terminal was built. It's a glorified Greyhound station for planes without any pretensions, and it works well.

By the way, Norway Airlines has incredibly reasonably priced tickets from Europe to the US (LA, NYC or Ft. Lauderdale) Got a ticket for our daughter to come home for Xmas. $425 round trip from Copenhagen to NYC. That's bare bones with no checked bags or food. but it's hard to beat that price.

Really appreciate your suggestion, although I'm not sure how this could work.
I'll keep it in mind, and propose to PM you when our plan (3 weeks in August) gets really serious. Again, many thanks

If your intent stays with renting a 1 way car its in your best interest to start the origin rental away for LAX or any big city airport. Going to xyz city offsite from airport has huge saving as the concession fees, tourist tax, etc. are daily fees that will ring up every day you have that car.
