Felony charges and up to 6 months for removing a schrader valve? WTF??? Is this scared straight? Thousands to fix? I'm in the wrong business. I should call them up and offer to fix it for half the current bid on the 'repairs'.

24 school busses equals 144 tires.
At 90 to 100 psi, probably unlikely they just pulled the shraeder valve internals. Would have come out like a bullet. More likely they nipped the valves with dikes doing it 144 times.

Add that to towing 24 busses, probable damage to tire sidewalls from something as heavy as a bus sitting on it over night meaning probable required replacement of a lot of expensive tires, the chaos of everyone not getting to school, ect. I can definitely see this causing minimum thousands of dollars.

These 4 are in big trouble

It depends on if they unscrewed the valve internals or broke off the valve stem. On large trucks the valve stem is metal and bolted through the wheel so stem breakage requires the wheel to be removed and tire dismounted. This isn't a trivial operation on a large wheel as most shops change large tires by hand.

And, all tires in the bus lot will need to be inspected, who knows if they slightly damaged one just enough to cause a slow leak or punctured a side wall. This could lead to a tire failure / crash while on the road.

This should be a felony charge as there is a huge safety issue here.

I'm guessing shrader. The intent of a.joke is.not to vandalize and busting off valves is definitely vandalizim. I've taken out a sharsder out out of a.truck tire. Not big deal.

Seems to me it's being blown out of proportion.

Why? I think you are underestimating the PITA factor of this little stunt.

Even if they did the shraeders only, these are school busses, which are subject to rigorous safery inspection standards. At a minimum every single one of these 144 tires will need to be dismounted, valves replaced, tires carefully inspected for damage inside and out, then reinstalled and rebalanced.

They arent going to just screw the internals back in if they even have them, and air them up. For one the valves are probably all over the parking lot.

The labor alone for all that will cost enough, let alone if they have to replace tires cut by rims. That also assumes the bus facility has the maintenance area right there as well.

It seems funny until you have to clean it up

And not to mention the collateral damage of not having school that day which was the stated intent of the vandalism. How much is it going to cost in overtime and disrupted schedules to make up the missed day? How soon can the buses be repaired? This isn't going to be fixed in one day unless you bring in a pretty large crew.

"" According to authorities, the students left behind a message in chalk stating: “You have been pranked by seniors 2015″ and “To have school or to not have school?” ""

There needs to be a pretty high level of punishment to deter others from doing the same thing.

Heavy restitution or community service might be appropriate. Make them work for free at the shop that services the buses for a few months. They might even learn something useful.

Felony charges just show how far the definition of a felony has expanded in a country corrupted by for-profit "correctional" interests. We're not talking about dangerous criminals who should have their voting rights and employment prospects curtailed for life.

It's a shame that anyone who's a CEO, lobbyist, or investor in a private prison company can't be arrested and locked up for life for treason and corruption. THOSE are the real criminals -- the people who are corrupting our justice system into a money-making machine for themselves.

Well said. I can agree with this.

You two guys need to step past the soapbox and conspiracy theories. The system is super simple.

For instance this is vandalism. Every state has some monetary amount for vandalism and exceptions to the rule.

That amount is different everywhere, but thats the line that separates between a felony and misdemeanor. Lets say for example in MA the line is 250 bucks, and NY the line is 1000 bucks. Not sure on OH, but its public data. The exceptions are nature of the crime is taken into account. Lets say for example i tag a historical building, i might be charged with a felony because of the nature of my vandalism.

This situation very likely these kids will get off with a non jail punishment like community service or some such. That is assuming they dont have records.

One thing for sure, better watch yourself jooseppi because the bar is low in MA.

The monetary amounts are frequently antiquated, not accounting for inflation. But, nooooo, no one considers raising them, because they might be considered soft on crime.

Also, DA's are not required to levy the maximum possibly applicable charge.

exactly.i bought a used 2000 bluebird bus.i believe it's a federal law that buses can not be over 10 yrs old.the one i bought had the engine replaced and all 6 tires about 6 months before it hit 10 yrs.so the school spent probably 10k to fix the bus just to retire it.which is good for me.but bad for taxpayers.

Court dockets are public record and usually online so following the case should be easy if you have their names.

It also helps to run the names of their siblings / parents as this kind of thing runs in the family.

That's only a problem if you get caught.
