Windows 10, Coming End of July

6 Features Disappearing in Windows 10 (and How to Replace Them) | PCMag.com

Windows 7 remains the most common flavor of Windows (in fact, it's the most common of all desktop operating systems) running on about 58 percent of all computers. Meanwhile, only 16 percent of users are running Windows 8 (that number includes both 8 and 8.1), 2 percent continue to rock Vista, and nearly 15 percent are still using XP.

Here are the system requirements for Windows 10:

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for a 32-bit version, or 2GB for 64-bit
Hard disk space: 16GB for a 32-bit OS; 20GB for 64-bit OS
Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
Display: 1024x600

Funny you mention it, I looked at the lower corner of my computer screen and there's a W10 icon. I clicked on it and it says I can upgrade to 10 for free... Hmmm, a trap?

I have that too so unless we are both part of a Nigerian Prince scam, it is probably real. I have a Windows 7 and an 8 machine and I don't care for the 8 so the 10 can't put me that much farther off especially if it is free.

Looking a lot better than 8/8.1 so far, and the cloud crap (OneDrive, M$ linked settings, etc) looks mostly avoidable if you use a local or private domain account. Kudos to them for un-hiding the local account option as well!

I'll give it 6-9 months before I switch on any computer I regularly use to see how real world stability, updating, etc go. But it seems more of an evolution of Windows 7 in the desktop, with a lot of the irritating aspects of 8/8.1 de-emphasized.

EDIT: the adware that comes with a recent update, which uses 3 MB of RAM just to say "reserve your copy of Windows 10 now" is just f**king obnoxious.

No need for an upgrade, they can adequately watch me through my current system.

10 actually has some decent features like a built in SSHd server.

I wouldn't say that out loud if I were you. They could piggy back your signal and burn your brains out to keep you quiet

I haven't looked at the specs but I thought I heard that was for the Pro version?

In case you haven't gotten the notice, pretty much all Windows PCs need to be patched.

I hope it is better than 8/8.1. I've been putting off buying a new laptop because I've been waiting for a better Window's operating system.

It's a FREE upgrade to Win10 from 7, 8 and 8.1, so no reason for a retailer to slash. MS announced that it's unlikely that retail PCs will have Win10 preinstalled at the time of the release this month.

A friend just mentioned the service pack--but cautioned me---
Nothing is Free, they would go bankrupt in 2 yrs flat.

Free OS updates have been the rule at Apple for the last couple of updates, since Lion, I believe. From 2013:

Prices of Apple’s Mac OS X have long been on the wane. After four releases that cost $129, Apple dropped the operating system’s upgrade price to $29 with 2009’s OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and then to $19 with last year’s OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

Microsoft — the king of the operating system in the ’80s and ’90s and on into the aughts — still charges PC makers who sell the Windows OS preloaded on their desktop and laptop machines, but that business is shrinking, thanks in large part to the continued success of Apple. And just last week, Microsoft announced that, much like Apple, it would not charge consumers who upgrade their machines to the latest version of Windows, version 8.1.
