I remember when my grandfather fell in love with a '69 Buick Wildcat hardtop parked in the front row of the local Buick dealer's used car lot. He went back to that place at least five times to work the sales manager over on the price. Finally, they threw their hands up and sold the car to him for the amount he wanted to spend.

The lack of a locking rear end doesn't surprise me. When I was truck shopping you would be amazed at the number of 4wd trucks at all price points simply were not ordered with them.

When I ordered my truck I made the sales guy check three times that they included the limited slip. I told them it was a deal breaker if the truck showed up on their lot without it.

I'd still buy it, but you have to get a discount, the open rear end sucks in any kind of slick stuff. You can put an air locker in it for a bit over a grand.

Its a shame because the G80 is actually a very good rear end, and GM only charges $300 for it from the factory...

I would prefer an air or electric locker over a mechanical one, as the former give me complete control when the differential is locked. A locked diff on an icy hill with a bit of road crown can be a pain if the back of the truck doesn't have a lot of room to move from side-to-side.

Ford is the only company that offers an electric rear locker in their pickups.

ARB makes a nice air locker for GM trucks, but you have to get the truck cheap enough to make the $1k price worth it.

Well I emailed the salesman yesterday with a very lowball cash offer, explaining my reasons. We'll see what happens but I'll be surprised if they answer. I told them I was not interested in a higher counter offer.

The wiki page says the 21st century 4.3 is an even 200 hp.
whom ever posting bs about them dosent have a clue about 21 st century gm engines- the 4.3 are very capable.
The weak link is the 1/2 ton transmission ... the 4l60e, these are pieces of Dukee.
they are also the transmission rebuilders godsend.
Anyone paying to have one of those hunks of crap redone is an idiot.

So you may ask now... what the hell do we do when the slushbox fries??

you go to a 4l80e `Le chico mallo, el BADBOY tranz.
you can get it from where ever.

I had a penskee 1 ton box van in my backyard for mine, But I also scout the boneyards
any 1997 or later chevy express van that's 8 lug wheels.

(I would trust a boneyard 80 over a rebuilt 60 --->AnyDAY)

r&r involves modding the crossmember and fabbing a shifter cable bracket, and a Whole LOTT of Patience and 3-4 tries to wressle that big summ***** up inere, the 60 is the typical 140 lb pos.

the 80 weighs 225 easy. if you swapped it into a v6 truck--you have to elongate the three torque converter bolts in the flywheel --Out to the ring geat 3/8" with a die grinder. the 80 to whatever uses 6 bolts, you end up only using 3.
The hard part of the swap is finding a local tuner to do a segment swap- remove the 60 operating system from the pcm and flash in the 80 system.

there's "relay mods" to use a 5 post bosh relay to invert the 3-2 shift selonoid, but mine was a 2000, the last yr of the old -dreaded Black Box pcm and it didn't want to work, the 01 -02 411 pcm is the favorite of the modding crowd and easier to do the segment swap because of enthusiast support.

Anyway -whoever was snickering at "a 4 yr old GM v6" on the 1st page, mine is 17 yrs old.
And it just hauled 1700 lbs to Texas --From the East coast, over mountain pass's in the blueridge mtn's that would kill any normal truck trying to do the same thing. like Mt Sandstone

the engine makes the slightest piston slap noise for a couple seconds on startup -if its around 33 degrees, otherwise it runs like new.

Just retired the '00 (V6, 3.7 L, auto) with 425,250 miles on the odo.
3rd tranny, still going...
MPG was in the 14-16 range...the S-10 was a 4WD.
Body was starting to cancer-out...back corner or the driver's side cab, around the rear wheel-wells and the bottom edge of the tailgate became tetanus-territory.
Had the FI Module swapped out about 7K before the retirement...

Over the years...
2 deer, lost the radiator the first time, obviously bumper, hood and the front clip, but the engine was relatively unscathed... Then the 2nd deer was...grill, right headlight and fender...took almost 2 months to get the right parts...but not a *tink!* on the engine.

Note on the tranny... When I had the tran rebuilt the 1st time, the guy who did the work mentioned that he bores out the channels for better/more fluid flow to the drive-plate...said it cut down on the drag between the two surfaces...causes a bit of a harder shift, not so "auto-like." Got about another 50K out of the rebuild than the original tranny from the factory. When it went the 2nd time, he rebuilt it and it was still going strong on the trade-in.

Only got $500.00 for the trade-in, though...

3.7 means s10, im no fan.
would not recommend anything about the mini chevy trucks like that.
claustrophobic driving experience-to say the least.
