A friend of mine owned one during the 80's. It was easy to work on, fun to drive and got rather good mpg. But buying parts, at least then, was tough since there was only one Buick dealer in the US that carried parts for it.
We were lucky in that the dealership was close to where we were, but even they had to contact Opel in Germany for stuff now and then. What killed owning one for me was the lack of an A/C. I think you could get an aftermarket one but the cost was several hundred dollars and it truly drained what little power the engine put out. |

R107's seem to be doing well.
IMHO R129's are a great buy right now.

I like the purity of the original 240z. I also like the third gen Supra. When I thought about this, I realized that what I hungered for was a Jaguar E-Type. Imitated, never equalled.

R129 500SL's are stupid cheap right now, like all other SL's they should go up.

Just in case you ever truly go after one remember that the early carbed versions, the 240, would vapor lock on just a sunny day. Nissan even installed a blower on one side of the engine that was nothing but a fan to blow air over the carbs to keep them cool.
And when they went to fuel injection the little fan stayed. I don't know if it was needed with the FI but it was there on the 280. And the 280 eats a water pump about every 40,000 miles. Like clockwork. But the good part is they are cheap and easy to change. |

Rust, rust, rust. Don't let it stop you but make sure of what you are buying.

Terminator Cobras have started to appreciate, as have Gen1 and Gen2 Dodge Vipers.
I don't think they'll hit stratospheric prices like old iron or old air-cooled Porkys, but I don't think you'll lose much on one if you held onto it for 8-10 years.

I agree on the R129. They really never dropped much below $10k for a good example and are now creeping up.
I am hoping my 190E 2.6 Limited Edition will be worth some money in the future. Only 700 made, and not many left it seems. I think the Cosworth is a better bet but I didn't have the money for one of them when I bought my LE. Mine probably won't remain stock for much longer, I'm about to put a 3.0 M103 in it with megasquirt.

I remember I could have picked up a 190E Cosworth for about $3k when I was 16, wanted a W126 though...back in 2002 they were like C43's are today, just an old car and not terrible valuable.
Kicking myself on that.
