I'll give up my air conditioning when-oh wait, I don't have AC in the house, or the car. I do need to take a look at my swamp cooler though.

There is an article out there somewhere that talks about how after WWII experts predicted that nuclear energy would change the world. Looking back years later the experts said that it was AC that had the most profound effects.

Water heaters and AC are good reasons for living in this time and place.

I don't even remember what the current residential freon is for new a/c units, but this spring I had to replace my entire central a/c. It is colder and runs less than the prior unit even under service contract.

Then two weeks ago my 16 year old GE refrigerator died. Got a new Whirlpool. Things stay frozen in the freezer, but it takes much longer to freeze than the old GE.

No model of any brand of refrigerator sold in the US has a warranty longer than one year.

the new residential units take R410a - it works good till you have a leak (duh), but unlike old R22 - you cannot top up R410a because its a two component refrigerant. - Full evacuation and recharge with fresh R410a is required.

why doesnt the EPA go after dupont with a fire axe if they knew dupont made a refrigerant that was hurting the environment - that too multiple times.

EPA is going to place severe restrictions on HCFC's as an end around to making owning anything refrigerated very costly.

I'm going into a new business venture selling ice from the Great Lakes in winter, stored in state of the art insulated buildings and offering horse drawn delivery.

This administration has a backlog of things they want to stick up our backsides that they haven't gotten around to. Obama made mention of it a week or so ago...Like lets get it moving.

I'm kinda surprised more houses are not of earth berm design. During these hot days of summer my dogs have dug some really deep holes under wooden porch where if there is any breeze at all it moves through the area.

How many times do you figure Lake Michigan ( for example) has frozen over in the last 100 years or so?

managing air movement through the house used to be the standard way of cooling down the house (at least where I lived in the past) - super tall ceilings and air moving from the lower to upper, the hot air naturally would exhaust through the upper level windows.

I'd use Superior, Huron and Erie

And they do not need to totally freeze over.
