AF 66 engine failure

Wow. I bet they were handing out clean undi's on that flight.

I am guessing Pratt and Whitney/GE will being under the spotlight for a bit. Looks like good engineering and good luck that the engine did not compromise the cabin or wing.

From the picture, it looks like the fan and a good part of the drive shaft and part/all of the low pressure sompressor are gone. Glad no one was hurt.

When the shaft broke the front part must have just taken off like one of those toy whirlygigs and gone forward without the weight of the plane to pull.

Crash Test Dummies

All airlines and aircraft manufacturers depend heavily on the public's continued support. They've managed to turn all commercial passengers into CRASH TEST DUMMIES. Keep flying the unfriendly skies; they need the DATA......

I flew af 66 a few times into lax. Don't know if it was this particular aircraft. I have no qualms about taking the same flight again.

Odds are there are multiple aircraft flying the route. When I worked for AAI would pull up the routing of various planes. The planes will bounce all over the place. As I recall, AA flew the same configurations to Europe and South America. Planes sitting on the ground do not make money. Plane came in from Europe, gassed, cleaned stocked and it was on the next flight out whether Europe of SA. Every few landing cycles it was run in for a check, a few more cycles, a heavier check and about once a year or so (may be longer ... I do not remember) a full rebuild. The odds of catching the same plane on a route are pretty slim unless the carrier does not have many of that aircraft type.

not many aircraft types have had catastrophic failures due to design. Most were due to human error by either the crew or maint. I think the A300 that lost it's vertical stabilizer over NYC was a design error. The tail was not able to withstand the inputs from the pilot to correct for the turbulence as I recall. I remember there was a UA747 that lost a cargo door but landed safely. The AS S80 had the jack screw failure but that was human error I think....

Flying is far safer than any other mode of transportation, but just like with mass shootings, a plane going down is much more glamorous than 30+ thousand individual death on the roads every year.

Airbus was begun as a collaberation of governments; all for one and one for all type of thinking.

Way too many chiefs and not enough indians.

And they managed to beat Boeing's crony capitalism by just about every metric. What does that tell you about the "free market"?

I'll second that. If it's good enough for the USAF, it's good enough to strap into.

Remember one particular trip in a four star general's highly modified Boeing KC 135. FIRST CLASS SEATING throughout the aircraft. The General had a very very nice desk/office in the rear. Two captains flew the General and those lucky enough to be on board in style, comfort and class. Only problem there was only one very small window in the fuselage making sight seeing difficult.

Lucky there was no fire or the end may have been different. All things considered airbus has done very well.

I think the expression. If it's not Boeing I am not going. Has somewhat passed into history.

The engine was built by GE/Prat and Whitney. Sooooo.... your point has no relevance seeing as nothing on the aircraft itself failed.

You would have to actually get on an airplane and your previous posts exhibit an absolute ignorance regarding air travel (all your stories not withstanding) indicating that you have not set foot on an airplane since the Wright Brothers flew at Kitty Hawk.
