Roll call for S600s
Would like to hear/ see pics from any and all owners who have a similar model to my recently purchased 97 S600 coupe. In the shop for several repairs. Think that the car is great, have seen lots of mods, especially wheels. Is the 12 problematic, compared to BMW or Jag 12's, etc.
Thanks for your time, JH |

All I heard about that 48 Valve V-12 is the maintenance cost. But, then again I doubt that you'll find a V-12 that is easy to maintain (later models at least). Think about it, that engine is similar to the engine that they put in the CLK-GTR (or so they say)
However, when I get enough money to buy .. say a used R129, I think I'd shell out extra cash for the SL600 just because it's a V-12! Any pictures of yours?

Actually V12 isn't much more "costly" to keep than 5.0L V8 they used in W140.... IMO, the engine itself is pretty much bulletproof IF well taken cared of...

V12 vs V8
Yes, today I went to the mechanic for a hood latch and fuse problem. I asked if the S500 would be less expensive to operate on and he said no, same hourly scale and overall costs. Body is exactly the same, only valve work, etc. would obviously cost a bit more.

I own a 60k mile 1994 S600 sedan. I bought it with bad engine wiring harnesses. I replaced them and have resealed the upper timing covers, replaced the front crank seal, and replaced the engine mounts. I still need to replace the evaporator... it isn't leaking that badly yet and I figure I'll take the time to do it in the fall. It is a wonderful car! The previous owner installed a Lorinser rear muffler, real Xenon headlamps with adjusters, and illuminated door sills! I chose the 600 because I came across a good deal on it.

S600C vs. 740IL
The benz is a 97, the bimmer a 98.
Initial response: BMW has tighter steering and suspension, which gives it a whole lot of confidence. Very balanced and stable at high speed. More interior 'stuff' and very nicely finished throughout. Very solid in every respect. Reminds me of my 97 E420 but not as bouncy tight. This car soaks up road imperfections quite nicely. MB is quieter inside, not as flashy. Also stable at high speed but a bit wallowy, not as confident as BMW. I do not like the easy power steering and more body roll. Seats fit better and are a bit cushier. No interior trim distraction. Both cars have OEM wheels and tires. I am not a street racer, just telling it like it is under normal driving up to 100mph. The BMW has to be a better buy considering the cost difference. The Benz is definitely one of a kind on the road. I am worried about maintenance. After dropping that 2 grand, now the car creaks and squeaks. Could that be the mechanic improperly messing around with the upper control arms/ bushings? |

It figures that the day after I post that my S600 is a "wonderful car", the right ignition coil (cyl's 1-6) dies! Well, when the 600 runs properly, it IS a wonderful car!!
