How easily we become spoiled. My first seven cars didn't have A/C, but two were convertibles. My first car with A/C was a fully loaded Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible which I purchased new in 1968. The MSRP was $4200.00 and I bargained down the sale price to $3400.00. Now, I'm spending a small fortune to repair the A/C on my 1990 300 SL.

It's been 100+ F here in Central Ga. for the last three days with humidity almost that high.
. My Falcon never had A/C and probably never will. But I used to drive it and never thought about it, even on dates. I do remember the windows used to fog up frequently, but that's another story for another time!!

I grew up in the Valley of the Sun and for many years, none of the cars I was carted around in had air conditioning. I played little league baseball in the summertime in the middle of the day and we went for long family vacations in the 56 Ford Fairlane stuffed to the windows. (It really was a DRY heat in the 60s. Not any more.)
Now that I'm older and softer and live in a place where the mercury passes 100 only about 7 times a year, I live in a house without air conditioning (houses built in the 20s simply weren't expected to have air conditioning). I like it. You actually get to hear the birds singing in the trees and the squirrels jabbering away at each other. The delta breezes rustle the oak leaves and it's pretty peaceful. Would hate NOT to have airconditioning in my car, though! Things have a way of coming back to you.

In Texas, not having A/C severely limits the asking price of any car you plan to sell!
As the summer progresses, I suspect the "overheating" threads will match pace with the A/C threads...

MB only just started fitting A/C as standard here in Europe.
It is optional on Classic and Avantgarde A-Class cars and on the SLK200 and 230 (I think). It was optional on all C- and most E-Class cars until about 1999. It's one gadget I wouldn't be without.

Dry heat
Howdy Cap,
I bought a T-shirt in Arizona few years ago that had a skeleton sitting on a motorcycle under a blazing sun. Under the motorcycle it said "Yeah but it's a dry heat"

I know what you mean Capt'n - my first few cars did not have a/c but once you got going down the road with the windows down it sure felt better than in that tobacco field
![]() ![]() Heck, my black 300D (r134 convertion) may as well not have it for what good it does. It seems that it is cooler riding down the road with the windows down .

Shoot I remember the first car we had at the house with A/C. It was an early 70's Plymouth that my Dad had bought. It had A/C, but the A/C was never used - except on special occasions. Never mind this was just north of Houston, where 95*F and 95% humidity are the daily norm, the A/C wasn't for everyday use. But like Jim's tobacco fields, leaving the welding shop at 4:30, rolling down the windows and cruising back out to the house, it was comfortable having the air blow through the sweaty clothes.
Now, I like to cruise with the windows down, top open (if in the 560) and the A/C on. Best of both worlds.

a/c?
We always had the 480 a/c system... open all 4 windows and drive at 80mph. It worked.
This benz is the second car with a/c that I've owned, but in typical fashion, the a/c is not functioning in either vehicle right now. Thankfully I'm out of the tropics and back in the NE, where it's only employed 4 days a year. Wind is good:-)

On my Falcon window sticker, radio and heater were options. A/C had to be added on by the dealer, if you could afford it! I think that up until the early eighties, all Japanese imports to the US had to have dealer installed A/C. I'm pretty sure Datsun did anyway.
