aauugghh - new windshield cracked again!!!

and the "star" chip is almost in the exact same spot where i got the other one. my body shop said something that had me thinking - "maybe there's something in the car aerodynamics that sucks the rocks to that spot". the thought had entered my mind because i had taken off the hood ornament in favor of a chrome plug i got from performance products. maybe taking it off created a vortex in the middle of my windshield

it hurts just to think about it, now i gotta see what my insurance has to say

Your car is trying to tell you to put the star back on

Dan,

You read my mind, I just might put it back on one of these days.

BTW, after reading the "soft MB glass threads" I think I'm going to try aftermarket PPG this time. My original glass was badly pitted and visibility was definitely affected. The family van, which is also a 93 still has the original glass and has more miles yet the glass has no pits like the benz had. I've had a couple of hard things bounce of the van's windshield on the highway too without any marks. And oh yeah, my insurance says no problem it won't affect my premiums just pay the deductible (yeah right).

Alon,

Does it say "Sekurit" on your new windshield? My new windshield is supposed to have been OEM MB glass but the only markings I see are the MB tristar with "PPG" plus some other numberings on the driver side at the bottom. I looked at my rear glass and it has "Sekurit" clearly etched on.

What's burning me up now is the thought that it could have been vandalism because this happened on the GCP where there are no trucks. The car in front of me was a Bimmer and I thought that what had hit my windshield was something that was flipped out of the car. The recollection just surfaced as I was talking to someone about and he mentioned that some idiots on the highway actually do this for kicks.

does anyone think that the vandalism angle is far-fetched? i guess i was too engrossed looking for where it hit because it made a loud crack just like the last time. the last place that i looked at was the spot where the old crack was - unbelievable!

Maybe missing windshield weather stripping or rubbing on the windshield is to blame?

Mine says Sekurit. No MB star, but it was installed by a professional who replaces mb windshields. My mechanic had him come, and the glass to me is 100% OEM.

I think the vandalism angle can work for you, as you were driving and something flew out of a car and hit you.

I found a post from M.B.DOC that says that many dealers get local PPG windshields, that's probably what I have. It does have the tristar on it.

German Glass thread

I guess you can expect anything on the highways of New York. About 10 years ago on the LIE, a spent bullet hit my car just above the headlight and shattered it. What a racket - I thought the engine had fallen off! Two inches higher and it would probably have hit my windshield! That's a Friday the 13th I will always remember.
