Another former car of mine went for big bucks.

Had a 71 Toyota Celica years ago. Ca car, perfect condition. Here's one (the only one I have ever seen for sale) went for $27,000 on BAT. If only I would have kept it for 40 years.

Thumbs up Time Capsule

I remember these being wildly popular when new and for decades used...

Fun good drivers .

I would never thought they were collectable. I have owned several "pedestrian" vehicles over the years that became collectable and valuable-like early 4 runners and Toyota 4wd trucks.

Smile "Collectable" Vehicles

Yeah, I hear that ~ I used to own a tired but complete and driving 1948 VW Beetle......

Only the engine had been changed .

I'm told it's worth a lot of $ now, back in the 1970's I paid about $3K for it including hipping and importing from England .

Times change, the hipsters decide what's cool and suddenly the price quadruples .

My old 59 Ferrari GT 250 PF coupe that I bought with a buddy in 1990 for the price of a small fixer upper at that time, put that much into it again, and sold in 2008, for enough to cover a nice medium sized home at that time to a fellow in England.

I think he used it to make a rare clone of a Vignale bodied racing car (which looks a bit like a fine Italian bodied Henry J) from the Carrera pan Americana.

A couple sold a few years ago for over a mil, but were fully restored and mine was a #3 driver quality needing an engine rebuild. The market has softened now and they are back to a medium sized house today.

I guess even if you had a crystal ball you would need to store and maintain the vehicles for years or decades. I have never purchased a vehicle as an investment.

I try to purchase things that hold their value. It reduces the sting on sale.

Now and then a person can get lucky.

Post Investment Value

Worrying about what it's worth after I'm done with it never crosses my mind ~ I buy to use and enjoy .

Look at all those low mileage Corvettes that are selling for little or no profit now, they could have enjoyed them but no....

Someone at work had to have a new Corvette. They drove to Ky to pick it up with great fanfare. A year later they were tired of it and sold it.

That Celica is valuable because it's a survivor and rare. Just about every other '71 Celica has been crushed into a cube that was dropped into the blast furnace. Except for the rub strips, the previous owner went to some effort to keep it original.

I look up the KBB values of my cars on the anniversaries of their purchase. My 2007 Chevy Cobalt SS has occasionally gone up in value a few hundred dollars from the previous year. It's not because of any collectability, though. There's a shortage of used cars now, especially cheap ones.

Agreed. I have not seen one in I don't know how long.
Even when I had it there were few around. I liked Toyotas and it was "kind" of sporty. I would not have expected them to become collectable just like my '71 Toyota pickup I used to own. Some vehicles just fade away but some are desirable for some reason. And I think some collectors are speculating. I guess I will need to add it to my vehicle list.

Toyota trucks, especially Land Cruisers, are gold now. Toyota of Bubbaville's building used to be a supermarket. They have enough space in their showroom for the owner's collection of vintage Toyota trucks.

I have owned (and own) several 4WD Toyota trucks, Early 4Runners and a '71 Hilux that have greatly increased in value by the BAT gauge. Of course I would have to have had some kind of insight to keep and store them so it's mostly entertainment. A Toyota Hilux went for over 20k a bit back. I drove mine until it died then parked it on our property back in the forest. But it was a rust free Ca truck-just not worth anything to me. I wanted to make a trailer out of it but it was so full of ants, bees and mice nests by time I got to it I just hauled it away.
