Windows 11 will likely send me to a Mac

I use an iPad and an iPhone, but my desktop is Windows 10, and is where I do any real computing.

My machine runs everything I need, Photoshop Elements, the current version, runs without a hitch or a slowdown. I’ve got plenty of room on my solid state HD, fast USB, a fast wifi card I installed, and a couple of extra HDs in there for backups.

I have never been RAM-bound, and can run a virus scan in the background without turning the machine to molasses.

So I was quite surprised to run the evaluator and be told my machine won’t run Windows 11. I’m ticked off.

I know I can get a new MB and CPU and for a few hundred bucks, just upgrade. But I won’t.

I expect that at some point, I am switching over to the new 24” iMac. Or the next one.

Microsoft is losing me with this. WTF is going to be so good about 11 that I should trash a perfectly functioning PC to get it? I know there will be support for Win 10 for another couple of years, but this ticks me off.

How many hundreds of millions of PCs will be zombified because of this?

Same thing here. My system, although a few years old, runs smoking fast with tons of RAM and memory (Gigabyte GA-78MT, AMD 8core processor, 24GB RAM, 2 500GB 7200RPM HD's). The one thing I am a bit light on is my video card. I'm wondering if this is why MicroShaft is telling me my system won't handle Windows 11. Been meaning to upgrade to an 8GB video card but right now the prices are insane!

No way am I going to go out and buy a new computer just to conform to Windows 11's "requirements". I'll fully go to Linux Ubuntu before I do that. I might do that anyway since I've retired and only need Windows for two or three programs. I already run Ubuntu on my shop laptop and it does everything I need and it's FREE plus no stinking automatic updates which always seem to occur just when I want to do some quick computing. Yeah, yeah, I know I can turn the Auto-updates off or set the time/day to apply them. I can always use a VM program to run those Windows programs if I really need to.

I have used a MacBook Pro for around seven years. I disliked it for around the first fifteen minutes, great ever since. Wife bought a desk top Apple 21" or so screen, never even turned it on other than the first day. She asks why don't you use that one, I say no need to.

My old desk top was running win 7. It was 12 yrs old or may be more. Did all I wanted from it. Just got to slow and I lost the original install CD so I could not format the drive. So I bought a new box. $500 for a i5/12gb/256ssd/1tb hd. Runs win 10. No need for 11. I'll run this till the wheel fall off and do the same again.

What is so good/bad about 11 that you would need a new computer?

I’ve been running Ubuntu Linux for years - highly recommend. Boots fast, always works, low resource use compared to windows and a lot cheaper than a Mac.

I recently asked one of my friends if he could estimate how many man-hours have been wasted trying to F&R (fix and repair) PCs running microcrap. He corrected me immediately; "it isn't man-hours Merc lover, Microsoft products have wasted MAN DECADES of our valuable time".

I'm running a Mac mini and every time I sit down at it I wonder why I didn't give the old PC the boot twenty years ago.......

I'm going to purchase Microsoft office for Mac and then there will be no good reason to own or operate a PC.

I always liked just upgrading what I needed to.

Also, PCs came to the office in DOS 3.2, so I always kept up at home.

Popping the case, adding some memory, a better video card when gaming, etc., one bit at a time. Not doable in a Mac, as I recall. Plus, cheaper for more power, and I already had a world of experience and many programs.

But a major processor and MB upgrade also usually calls for better memory chips, even if my case, power supply, video and wifi cards, and solid state drives are still up to snuff.

It just pisses me off that fully functioning hardware is all of a sudden zombieware.

Just run Win10. I have a mac for work and run both windows and linux boxes for various side stuff. I like them all...hard to go wrong as long as you can see everything that is happening, have admin, etc. The hardware requirements on dev preview win11 were confusing but I am guessing they will fix it out of beta.

I’m seeing some pushback on the stated requirements.

Could it be that Microsoft overstated the requirements?

When it ships, we will see. I know I don’t have to switch any time soon.

1. How old is your computer?
2 Is it a cheapie? Throwawy computers tend to be cheap because they’re built with low end old components which obsolete faster.

It is not a cheapie. I built it from good components:Asus MB, Intel I5, 16 megs of RAM, SSD drive. Without looking at the paperwork I can’t tell the age, but the only problem seems to be the generation of the chip. It works absolutely fine. When a virus scan is running in the background, there is no sluggishness.

When IBM first designed and manufactured the PC, they failed to submit the design to ISO for ISO certification. IMHO, a big reason why PCs are "problematic".
