Michael Pollan talks about quitting coffee for three months...

... and then starting again.

https://youtu.be/mAPG18zNtXk

Well this is weird. I watched it for free on YouTube, and now they’re saying you need to use Spotify.

Thumbs up Wonderful COFFEE

I'm old so have been listening to the back and forth of "coffee is bad for you" scientific reports followed the next year by "coffee is good for you" scientific reports....

All I can tell you for sure is : the first cup of the day is always the best one .

I often get up at 02:00 or later (earlier ?) and go get a nice hot cuppa....

Typically my Foster buys begin enjoying coffee at 12 ~ 13 years old, they drop it again by the time they're 17 or 18 .

Growing up working in snow country I began drinking and enjoying coffee by age 11 or so .

I have mixed feelings about the stuff, I composed the OP while sitting in Peet’s. I wish they were as ubiquitous as Starbucks as I prefer them.

If you can score a viewing of the video, it’s interesting. Pollan is a bright light in the field of that which we put in our bodies IMO. He gets into the history a little bit, some of it I already knew, such as many people routinely drank weak beer and other alcoholic beverages as it was usually safer than drinking water. Children as well. People were frequently slightly buzzed. With the arrival of coffee and tea, things started to change. As those require boiling of water, the same water safety service is performed. Only then people were mildly buzzed in a different direction.

I don’t think coffee is all that bad, but there is a downside to it. It leads to weakened bones and marrow. It also interferes with sleep. Pollan mentioned that he slept better during his time away.

The hellacious headache you get when you quit coffee is not a withdrawal symptom, it is a symptom of the toxicity of coffee, no longer masked by the stimulant effect, which wears off more quickly. During my times of most serious coffee addiction, I found it annoying that I had to have a cup by noon or 1 PM to keep the humongous headache away.

I consume about 32oz a day, mostly in the morning. I have gone stretches without it but to be honest, coffee is simply delicious. It is like wine -- tons of nuance and variety between various sources, roasts, etc. Commercial coffee shops (starbucks, peets, DD) are pretty bad. One of the better places around here, and which distributes pretty widely now is La Colombe. A lot of indie places buy their beans and grind/brew themselves.

If I sound snobby about coffee it is because I kinda am. I worked with a guy years ago whose wife was a coffee importer (I think for La Colombe but I could be wrong) and he would deliver fresh off the ship beans in the office. The founder of my current company also had a coffee importing business (purely by chance and unrelated) so we would always have great stuff on hand. Fresh ground, french press brew is delicious.

I also am fond of the flavor, the ritual. Peet’s can be pretty good but I agree, nothing compares with freshly ground, gourmet made stuff at home.

I feel about it sort of the way I feel about pot. When I haven’t had it in months, the first indulgence is incredible. Just amazing. Once I broke a two year fast on both on the same day. Whoa, I was bouncing off the walls.

But then, with either substance, the joy of using it diminishes after using it every day for a week or two. But I have a hard time doing either one only one day a month, for example.

I maintain that most of us would do well to use such things sparingly. When I’m not drinking coffee, a really good daily beverage is a tea made from ground ginger and green tea, with some lemon or lime added. Supposed to be quite good for you an an empty stomach first thing in the morning. I use it to down my daily SAM-e supplement tab. That highly recommended as well.

Thanx guys .

I agree, too much coffee is very subjective, I used to drink quarts of it daily but now go many days without so I don't get the headaches nor the jitters .

Pot just makes me stupid(er) so it's off my list .

Pot is sketchy stuff. I’ve noticed that if I smoke it after a long time away from it, it has a way of reminding me of some of my more enticing dreams. By that I mean, ambition to do something worthwhile that is off the normal beaten path. It can be easy to descend into a mundane day-to-day existence. Some dreams are worth keeping on the back burner and getting attention now and then.

But you can really get strung out on the stuff. A lot of things are like that. Too much alcohol definitely not good, a little bit now and then pretty nice. Too much ice cream can be a serious problem. I maintain the stuff can give you cancer. The saturated fat and sugar amounts in one pint of Häagen-Dazs are huge.

I’ve gone through long spells of not paying attention in that regard. I go through phases thinking I’m bulletproof regarding sugar.

Post Coffee Addiction

I can dig that .

I stopped drinking coffee daily some time ago so maybe it doesn't bother me as much .

I still like sugar though ~ I shy away from candy, chocolate and ice cream but love my cola .

I still recall my experience when I read “Sugar Blues” around 1978. I was working in a machine shop, one guy was about to retire, he had just turned 65. One day he shared some cookies that his wife had made with us. Just the barest hint of sweetness. He said they had a tiny bit of molasses, and a lot of bran. He said they hadn’t eaten refined sugar in about 25 years. It suddenly struck me, the guy was really fit looking for 65. Broad shoulders, tight ass.

That night, I happened to see a paperback of “Sugar Blues” for sale. The before and after photos of the author on the back caught my eye.

I was impressed with the book, read half of it the first night and quit sugar and coffee cold turkey. I had hellacious headaches for three days. On the fourth day I woke up feeling remarkably relaxed. I was taking deeper breaths with greater ease than I could recall a long time. Stayed off religiously for two years. Cute bank tellers would ask me if I had lost weight when they looked at my ID. I hadn’t lost much.

I should try it again.

I saw an ominous sign today. I was at a stoplight, at some point a guy in one of those small golf cart wheelchairs went across in front of me and into a driveway of a business right there on the corner. There were two businesses there, one of them was a drive-in espresso joint. Sure enough, the guy motored up to the window and proceeded to order something. I thought to myself, is God trying to speak to me here? You read about people sneaking a cigarette in between their oxygen sessions while suffering from emphysema. Trouble is, I talk a good game, but my willpower has been weak lately. We’ll see.
