Thumbs up Custom E - Bike

I am loving watching this .

I wish I was allowed to go trash picking, I still have a few things I scored at the town dump in the mid 1960's .

When we lived in Ca I managed to intercept a few loads before they got dumped. A bunch of cool forged mining relics from the many mines that were in the area. Someone was cleaning out the underneath of a house for sale. In fact our property there was once part of a mining operation. Lots of rock tailing piles and holes. We used the rocks to build retaining walls and trails.
I'm off sugar today. We will see how long I can hold out. Neighbor just dropped of a delivery. Got 3 boxes of See's candy in the mail yesterday. Stayed up until 1am yesterday eating cookies and watching baking shows on TV.

Thumbs up Almost There

Christmas is Sunday and we're forecasted to have 80 degrees F.

I hope all are well, I need to go give my Mechanic a nudge about my 240D or ask him if I should take it elsewhere .

Anxiously awaiting the spokes to show up so I can build the wheel. I am going to hydraulic disc brakes to tame all the power. I am buying a new disc brake, sealed bearing front wheel and the rear will be disc of course. I like the lower seating position/step through frame of the moped vs a bicycle and the bigger seat is more comfortable. It's basically going to be a scooter but with a vintage "vibe" with the spoke wheels and vintage look. There is quite a scooter culture out there but mostly So Cal. Lots of rental scooters running around here-got to watch out for the tourists.

Making some progress on the brakes. Attached the rear caliper by removing the spacers from the caliper bracket, welding on a nut where the shock mounts using the shock mounting bolt and adding a bracket for the other mounting hole. I used compressed air to clamp the caliper onto the disc so I could get the proper pad contact them shimmed the caliper to the correct position for welding the nut/bracket.
Overall I was impressed with the quality of the Amazon brake system. The master cylinder is compact and feels quality. I used a front caliper on the rear since the single piston rear caliper that came with it was very bulky. Even with the additional caliper the hydraulic system was $44. The hydraulic line is not long enough since I mounted the caliper far back.

Got the rear wheel laced and truing mostly done. As seen the spokes are very short. The motor has paired spoke holes to allow radial lacing with small dia wheels and provide a tangential element.

I used the moped swingarm clamped to the workbench. It took less than an hr to lace and mostly true the wheel. I'm waiting for a spoke wrench so I can finish it up. The radial pattern is very easy. The heavy motor made it more difficult.
I received the new front wheel. I think it was intended for a small motorcycle as it has 10 gauge spokes and a large brake disc but it is so cool I am going to make it fit.
Now it's time to order the expensive elements-the controller and battery.
New front wheel:

Thanks Tom. It's a learning process and mixing bicycle, scooter, motorcycle and moped elements from different eras complicates things somewhat. I can always use the EV stuff on a different project if the need arises. The E part is actually the easiest part so far. I hate to can most of the work I did on the original moped but that's progress.
Nice, sunny day here-pretty rare for this time of year. Looking forward to the New Year

Making progress-got the rear wheel built and front fork built to fit the disc brake wheel. Now I'm waiting for the controller and battery. Here's the complete rear wheel:

Had an appt at the DMV (oregon) yesterday and asked about the plates. This person was helpful and explained they will run 2 plates per appt without the physical plates being present. I only need 1 (rear) plate so that expands the possibilities greatly. The 60's-70's plates look very much like the Ca plates-blue with yellow and 3 letters/numbers.

I could probably get away with using them as long as I did not go on the freeway and had the Oregon plates with me. You would not believe some of the plates on cars here. I saw one that was just a blank piece of metal.
Edit: I was just on the Oregon DMV website and they permit using vintage plates under some circumstances. I will get in touch next week for details.
Edit#2: Only for "Special Interest Vehicles" for limited use so that is out. Oregon does offer plates that resemble the plates from 1959 to 1964 and they look just like the originals so I will probably go with those when the time comes. They look quite similar to the blue Ca plates on the car now.

Got the controller a few days ago and the battery is on the way. By next week I should have it moving. In the meanwhile, I'm redoing the 12V electrical and finishing the fork. Once I get the battery I can see how the under-seat mounting works out. I'm going to use a 48-12V converted for the lights.

I have a running motor finally but the bike is not on the road yet. Still finishing up the front fork and some wiring. I'm building a battery tray that fits inside the bottom of the seat and should only take about 1" of padding away. A few glitches-the battery would not charge. I finally found the charger was set for 230v. Next the controller would not communicate with the configuration software. Found the controller breakout/throttle cable needed 2 pins shorted to enable the comm port and I had to download drivers for the USB serial cable. Got the motor configured and ran it with the rear wheel elevated. Getting excited.

I had some back and forth with the controller to get the config right but I got it dialed in. Went for a small test ride even though it was freezing and almost dark. I was really impressed with the acceleration. It exceeded my expectation. If I set back in the seat the front wheel comes off the ground at FT takeoff but all the weight is in back. Still have some welding, finishing up and waiting for some wiring supplies. Current is set at the default 33A but I may try the full 40A when I get it finished up.
