Vintage Bits & bobs
Gotta watch out for those yard/tag/garage/estate sales ~
I used to hit them regularly and have way too much old crap no one else wants and I'm loathe to throw away . A basket is a *very* good thing indeed ~ my ol Honda CT90 has a loading platform on the back and I added a milk crate, it turns out a large Coleman cooler fits snugly into it so I can carry a few dozed cold drinks / bottled water on my Desert jaunts..... I'm still looking for a rear rack for my 1984 Honda CB125S, I don't care if it's rusty or bent, I'll fix and re chrome it if ever I find one .

When we lived in Ca we were really into the garage sale/flea market scene. We did several flea markets a year then they seemed to lose popularity and closed down. Pretty small community here-maybe 1 or 2 small flea markets a year with old, left over garage sale merchandise.

Maybe I should list my ped on BAT: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1980-puch-maxi-3/
Just kidding-mine is not even in the same universe but I did not know there was a following willing to pay serious coin for vintage mopeds. Baskets should be here tomorrow-getting ready for the grocery run.

Back to the plates. I attended a car show today. Lots of nice cars but nothing European. I am pretty sure mine will be the only vintage MB at any show here I attend.
Anyhow lots of cars with period plates. I asked as many owners as I could about the process-most said the plates were on the car when they bought it-some were original to the car. Only one had any useful information. He said the Oregon DMV never re-used a sequence so theoretically one could bring in any unused plates and they would be good. In a small population state like Oregon that could be true. Also only the rear plate needs to be installed. I have to go in to get my RealID in a few weeks so I will ask then. Got the baskets installed but I need to move them back a little-my legs hit them when I'm doing the "Flintstone mobile shuffle" to get it started. I'm thinking about installing a kick stand instead of the center stand-it's a little heavy to pull up on the stand with the extra weight of the baskets and 12v battery.

Still struggling with slow acceleration on the ped. It all boils down to the tall gearing. Even with the smoother clutch engagement (more to come later) it still bogs when slow and taking off in traffic is sketchy. I ran all kinds of solutions through my head-most expensive. I finally decided to rear gear it with a larger rear sprocket. I don't need to go 30mph but I do need to go up a hill and take off in traffic. The original sprocket is 42 tooth but there are no larger that fit. I found the least expensive 60 tooth sprocket I could. The center bore was larger so I modified it by cutting the old gear to the ID of the new gear to make a locating ring. Once I insure there is no runout I will tack weld the ring to the gear. Then order a new chain.

I;m keen to see how this works out .
You're supposed to need to pedal from a dead stop with MoPeds. It looks to me like you're going to have blasting acceleration to a very low top speed .

I know about the peddling but I don't like 2 chains and I repurposed the pedals into foot rests. I don't really need to go more than 15mph or so. There is no where in this town that's more than a mile away and it's mostly neighborhood streets with 20mph limit. The lower gearing will help it go up the (small) hill. It should be able to do a wheelie.

And on it goes...
Got the chain. The 2nd one. Fits the rear sprocket but not the small front one. Apparently, the pitch is slightly off on the Peugeot so I need to install a 420 pitch front sprocket which will require some creative modifications. Ordered the sprocket which was very inexpensive but will require machining out the center quite a bit, cutting off the old gear and welding the new gear on the hub.

I'm afraid the gear is going to be as hard as Superman's Kneecap when I machine out the center ID.

Maybe use one of those water jet cutting machines ? .
I have no idea where to find one but I'm amazed at what they can do .

Don't have one at my disposal. I have some ideas. The original setup is rather cheezy with a lever to disengage the sprocket if one want's to pedal but it introduces play. I think I will lock it up since it will never be used.

I got the gear and as I suspected nothing I have will make a mark on it. I ruined a Unibit trying to drill it out. I got to thinking about using my MIG welder to cut it. Did a little research and found instructions for making a "Plasma cutter" buy using a carbon electrode and a compressed air jet. If I take the gear to a machine shop it will probably be $100 just to touch it. For a few bucks I can make the "Plasma cutter". Anyone tried this?
